Will ddr memory work on a board that uses a lower freq? For example, will a 433mh stick work on a board that has the maximum shown at 400mh? So is it backwards compatable?

Yes memory rated at 433MHz should work on a board with a maximum of 400MHz. It will just run at the slower frequency.
