Hello Nigel,
Is there a PS connection on the mobo for a mouse? (I know, seemed like a lame question but I had to ask)
Have you looked through BIOS for a way to disable PS support?
Is this something new for this machine or had it previously worked this way?
Start>Control Panel>Mouse>Hardware tab...

Good luck

strange thing about this computer the bios would not auto-dect the hard drive. even tryed to put the settings for it no luck but when i put a different hard drive on it there was no problems.
except for the mouse.

Adapters are readily available and generally pretty inexpensive....
