IBM Aptiva P100 40MG Ram

System starts normally then defaults to bios setup screen. The hard drive is no longer listed, I try booting to floppy and floppy starts then I get screen that shows floppy drive insert disk and press F1. Had hard drive checked dealer said it was good that I should auto detect drive. Can't find that at all. Switched floppy drive and got the same. Is it the battery? Did I get a virus and it zapped my bios? How do I get floppy drive to work, I would not mind re-installing and re-formating the drive, it is my second computer and not used a lot.

If you have motherboard book, see where clear cmos jumper is and clear cmos. Make sure power is off and you are grounded. Then enter set up, it should be on your first sreen, enter and set clock, put in auto detect hard drive, put in floppy. Exit and save changes. If you do not have book on mother board, it will be on the motherboard somewhere real small print. If you can not find it remove battery for about an hour, and reboot. While you are in the case double check all your jumpers, and cables, make sure cable on pin one. Check for bent pins also.

lotta times with older BIOS, you just highlight the master drive and press ENTER and wait a few seconds- it will auto set the HDD.

Also while you arelooking for the battery you may just want to grab a new one, although on some of the older boards they had battries that where soldered to the board and you need to find the header and clip some connections to install a new battery (the manual shoud tell you what you need to do).
