Hey Triplej,
I had this on a Dell workstation I work on. Sorry I can't remember the steps I went thru right now, but I know I talked to Dell Tech support.
Good luck

triplej are you saying that they have installed somthing on that computer that can inform them of the cover of the system being removed?
#1. that is a total and Blatent invasion of privacy. were you informed of this at purchase?
#2. if this is the case then the only way that it is possable is if they have some kind of wire soldered to the cover it's self, or the thumb screws some how it has to be pretty obvious. I would find it and deactivate it.There is no way that i can see that this would be possable if the system is unplugged and you open the case. unless it is hooked to the battery in some way?

#3.I would look thru the contract that you sighned at purchase and see if it makes mention of this in any way.

#4.If it does not i would take $25.00 and the contract and seek the advice of an attorney.this sounds to me like unfair trade practice

I know people will say well what is fair and to whom but if you were not informed of this in writing you have a good law suit here. It's like tapping your phone no no no no.I have a little device on my phone that informes me when such procedures are taking place and it automatically scrambles signal http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif gotta get up pretty early in the morning to fool me
Man that makes me Mad. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif

Thanks for the response, I took bassman ideal and checked with dell support and found that dell placed a censor on the cover and is detected via the bios, I also got instructions on how to disable it will try later on next boot. Will post back later with good or bad news.

again thanks

yep.

it is a DELL BIOS setting, generally disabled except with pc's that are intended for rental use...ie.- renta center..etc.

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

very easy to undo in BIOS.

worked on one just last week...... found out it was a good thing to have on.. seems the computer owners brother had opened the case and disconnected the HDD in order to stop his sister from tying up the phone with her modem connection!!

(no HDD= no connection= no phone tie up)

LoL

think of it another way, it can tell you if someone has been in your case while you were away, or- if they say they have been in there and done something.. and really haven't!

heh

Sorry here is the fix.

For owners of OptiPlex GX1, GXA, and all older OptiPlex systems that are equipped with this feature, please perform the follow steps:

Restart the computer and press <F2>, or <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Enter> at the same time, to enter the CMOS setup.
Use the down arrow key on the keyboard to highlight Chassis Intrusion.
Chassis Intrusions should display Detected since the cover was removed.
Change Detected to Enabled, Enabled-Silent, or Disabled using the right and left arrow keys on the keyboard.
Enabled - Resets the Alert message until the cover is removed. This setting is designed for use in a managed PC environment with multiple users where security concerns are present.
Enabled-Silent - Similar to Enabled mode, but the message, Alert! Cover was previously removed. will not be displayed. Instead it will only display the Detected message in the CMOS screen.
Disabled - This setting will disable all Alert and Detected messages. This setting is designed for single user environments where system security is a low concern.
If the above procedure fails to resolve the problem and you need additional troubleshooting assistance, you may communicate with a Dell Technical Support Representative by e-mail. To do so, go to http://support.dell.com/us/en/emaildell/ and select the option that best describes your problem.

Chassis Intrusion
Chassis Intrusion displays the status of the system chassis intrusion monitor and can be set to Enabled, Enabled-Silent, or Disabled. The default is Enabled.

If the computer cover is removed while the intrusion monitor is set to Enabled, a Desktop Management Interface (DMI) event is generated, the setting changes to Detected, and the following message appears during the boot routine at the next system start-up:

Alert! Cover was previously removed.

If the computer cover is removed while the intrusion monitor is set to Enabled-Silent, a DMI event is generated and the setting changes to Detected, but the alert message does not appear during the boot sequence at the next system start-up.

If the intrusion monitor is set to Disabled, no intrusion monitoring occurs and no messages appear.

To reset the Detected setting, enter System Setup during the system's POST. In the Chassis Intrusion option, press the left- or right-arrow key to select Reset, and then choose Enabled, Enabled-Silent, or Disabled.

NOTE: When the setup password is enabled, you must know the setup password before you can reset the Chassis Intrusion option.
