View Full Version : No post, no boot (e-machines)

I replaced my father's e-machines (333id I think, 333 celeron w/ DVD, 32mb) with a machine I built off the internet. The e-machines originally had a dead power supply which is a common point of failure for this machine (I think the original PS was 125watts). The 145watt supply appeared to work for about a week and what appears to be a new problem has developed.

I am trying to salvage this machine but now the new problem is the system powers on immediately whenever power is applied (it is plugged into the wall). I have tried disconnecting the DVD, diskette and the harddrive but the system will immediately start when it's plugged into the power outlet. I have reseated the memory also. The machine has powered on once in the first 3 or 4 attempts but for the last 15-20 attempts, it just powers up immediately. There are no post beeps or any BIOS screen that appears. The harddrive and DVD do appear to get powered up.

Could the new 145watt power supply be gone again? I have a 300watt ATX PS but I know it won't fit this case (custom case w/ special PS). I think I can try using the 300watt PS outside the case for a test. The motherboard is a mini-ATX and I think this PS should work. Can someone confirm?

Anyone know if this could be a memory problem? I had PC133 memory in it for a while and removed it and put it in the replacement PC. For $15 I'd be willing to give it a try.

What bothers me is that the machine does work properly once in a blue moon. Guess I might have to get a calendar that tells when there is a blue moon.

Any help would be useful. Thanks...

Blue moon---second full moon in a given month (Nov 30)...so you should have a good day at the end of the week http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I think that your idea of trying the PS outside the case will work, yes it uses a custom case and PS but it size only, the connectors should be standard.....
