Hope someone has run into this, a relative had an older box celeron 400/24mb - while installing dsl - the older unit did not have the min 32MB Ram(sbc/prodigywent) to fryes, grabbed a byo - soyo K7VEM+ board, amd duron 950 - 128mb - migrated floppy/45x cd / disk to new box - fdisked / formatted - loaded win 98 se - things were running fine - so went to hook up dsl....after installing the nic, went on to setup sw (disk 2) from pac bell (sbc disk one, installs nic drivers, runs minimum requirements etc.....then the sw to register and connect - got all that ok - but the machine now will just "power out" then boot up again, losing whatever you were doing, just like it was powered off in the middle of whatever it is you are doing - to make matters worse, another "sbcglobal.net" user said after he installed, system hangs and does not reboot http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/confused.gif

This was the first time I actually installed a processor (wow)

can you try this post in plain english??

what is "BYO"??

a punk band??.......... a new draft beer??

the rest is not real clear to me.. main thing I got out of it was you (your friend) was working on an old Pac bell...............

welcome to Pcguide

edit: after reading this several more times, I am seeing that you attempted to use the pac bell Master (disaster- green cd's??) cd's. These are for the original system setup.. not surprising that it will not work with all the new stuff you have put in.

Hey SEA,
I'm kinda with you on this one. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
The one thing I am picking up is, out here (CA) Pac Bell also refers to Pacific Bell (phone company, they offer DSL)

Jhardi, not sure what SBCGlobal.net is about, but if it has to do with your DSL service and their software is causing this, you should call their Tech support. They either have documentation of this and know exactly what to do, or they need to know there is a problem. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Also check in Device Manager for any conflicts...especially with the NIC.

Sorry Sea, it has been a long night / day trying to get this unit running - BYO = Build Your Own kit, add drives and memory - included soyo motherboard sy-k7vem+ with AMD Duron 950 approved power supply and case - I assembled the unit - formatted 9.1gb seagate drive, installed os win 98 se (since last post, swapped out old drive for seagate 9.1gb) - Bottom line is the system just cuts off - then restarts - like someone hit the reset button - the sbc software has been ruled out, as it is not installed on this drive......while formatting drive, loading operating system, it runs fine....no problems.

edit: after reading (and understanding ) a little better it is apparent that your adsl install was/is the problem.

I hestitate to seem repetitive on the scanreg /restore trick, but seems to me that if you restored to prior to that event you would be ok again, and then you would need to contact pacbell about their install software.

boot to option 6 "Command Prompt only" by pressing F8 at boot.

at the C prompt type scanreg /restore -with a space between scanreg and /.

press enter.

restore to the day before you did this.

as a side thought, I hope you disabled your active anti-virus when installing anything.

**win9x/winME only, and you only have 5 backups to choose from.

But it is still giving me fits - it just flat goes black screen while doing routine tasks - then reboots, runs scandisk etc... like a hit to reset button, almost like an electrical short or something....but while formatting hdd and installing os it ran fine ... I have never seen this type of problem....

The most common reasons for spontaneous reboots are heat, power problems, and bad RAM...you already suspect that it may be a short...try another PS if you have one available.

I agree with mjc. If I understand this right, you're using the old case with all or mostly new components, with an AMD 900 CPU. That puppy along with some of the other hardware draws a lot of power so if the power supply is less than about 300watts and/or not AMD approved, it's not able to supply sufficient power to run the new system, so it shuts down whenever the system tries to draw more power than the PS can produce.

In other words, get a new power supply. In many cases you can put about $10 with that and get a spiffy new case...
