Hello !! It is me again.

I got a problem with my USB ports.

If I plug my HP Jornada (pocket PC, windows CE) in the craddle when it is plugged in the USB, it works OK...


However, if I try to plug any other device, Windows (XP) gives me a "unknown device" answer. I tried with two devices: a webcam and a USB drive, which were working a few days ago, and they don´t seem to work. Windows don´t even try to find the right driver for them. It says: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned" and so on.

Any advice ??

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers for the webcam and removable drive, then reinstalling?

When these devices are connected do they show up in device manager as "unknown devices"?
Have the device drivers for these ever been installed?
Do you have drivers for them?
How about using the "Update Driver" button to install the drivers?

1. Yes, they are listed as "Unknown devices".
2. These devices were working perfectly well before, without the need of installing adicional drivers.
3. And no, I didn´t uninstall the drivers for the cam or usb drive because they don´t even show in the list of devices when I plug them.

Some additions:
They show as "Unknown devices" but NOT with the Yellow question mark. Instead, they show as Unknown devices" under "usb controllers" on the Device manager. IF I click to check the drivers, the Device manager says that no driver was installed for that hardware. Then if I click "update driver" and choose the place where the drivers are located, it says that "there is no driver compatible with your hardware"... It happens with the webcam, the USB drive. WIth the HP jornada it works OK and with the printer, it recognizes the printer but don´t "talk" to it. If I send a print job it never gets to the printer.

Before it all started, when the windows could not recognize a device, it would list as UNKNOWN DEVICE with a big yellow questio mark, but not anymore.

if the PDA didn´t work, then I would guess a hardware problem. However, after I installed the PDA sofware I could use the cam AND the usb drive WITHOUT PROBLEMS...

If no luck, then try a system restore.

If still no luck, then you may have to resort to reinstalling Windows.
