Last year I put together a computer using a P4 2.4B chip on an Intel D845PESV motherboard. I used the stock Intel heatsink and fan with ArcticSilver 3. Intel's "active monitor" reported the CPU temp. to be 32-34C. at idle. MBM5 reported the same thing.

I just took that processor and put it on an MSI 865PE Neo2-P motherboard. Using an "arctic cooling super silent" heatsink and fan with the same ArcticSilver3, the BIOS and MSI's "Core Center" report the temp. as 45C. I then loaded MBM5 and it reads the temp as 31/32C.

Are any of these temps. reliable? Go with the BIOS? Why would the chip run at 32-34C on one board and 45C on another? Both heatsinks were lapped. I did things pretty much the same way on both installations.

Any thoughts on what's causing the differences in temp.?

Heh heh...No thoughts? ;)

Just to update...I took the heatsink off. Cleaned it and the CPU and reapplied AS3. That got the BIOS, Core Center and MBM5 all reading 49C. At least they all read the same.

Sooo...I took the heatsink back off and lapped it to 1500 grit this time. Last time I stopped at 800 grit. That dropped the temp. to 40C in all three programs.

Took it off again, cleaned it up and used some new ArcticSilver 5. That brought the temps. down to a happy 36C. :)

Mission accomplished.

As you were...:D

Grit. The roughness of the sandpaper. 1500 grit just polishes a surface.
