When I turn on the computer, I get a blue screen with hp invent. The post does not beep and theres a clicking sound coming from the computer. When I try to reboot to go into the BIOS, the hp invent screen says "entering setup". Then it just hangs there.

If you are getting something on your screen, you are getting POST. You don't get any video until POST is complete. You could try resetting your BIOS to see if that helps, but you may need to get into more down and dirty diagnostics. It would be a good idea to say more about your system, if this is a totally new problem, what troubleshooting you have done and if you have changed any hardware/software recently.... The more you tell us, the more likely we can help....

Also, what does "hp invent" mean?? Are those the actual terms on the screen??

Thank you for your help. However, how do I repair the BIOS, if I can't get the computer to enter into setup.

Welcome to PCGuide Forums.

Could you supply more details of your PC and setup. Operating System, Mobo, CPU, etc., along with a bit more background about the problem?

Blue screens are not rare in some operating systems.

Thanks:)

There are 2 main ways to reset the BIOS without Setup. You can find he Clear CMOS jumper on the motherboard. It will usually be on 2 of 3 pins. You remove it from those 2 and move it to the middle and previously unused pin. Then you move it back and see if your computer works.

The second way involves finding the battery on your motherboard and removing it. Unplug your computer first and after you remove it, press the power switch as though you are going to start up the computer. I have been told that it will clear immediately, but I like to do something else for about 30 minutes and then replace the battery. Plug the machine back in and try it...

If it still doesn't work, we will have more extensive problem solving to do.... Be sure to provide the info I asked for if you need more help....

Budfred: That's just the splash screen on HP machines, like the blue Compaq logo screen.

hammie: The clicking sound could be the hard drive dying, among other things. We need to know more about your computer, as Budfred already said, like system specs, is this a new problem, have you added any hardware or software that might have caused the problem, etc.

Kimbo,

I have an HP and I know about the splash screen, but I am not sure that is what hammie is talking about, I have never heard of it referred to in that way....

This could all just be due to a failing HDD (particularly with a clicking sound). Remove the HDD cabling from the mobo and then see if you can get into setup.

The display could well be a HP splash screen - since I have seen the whole process "freeze" at this point with a bad hdd or it cabling.

I'm at work right now, so I'll have to guess at the spec on my computer. It is a 2.5GHz Pent.4/512MB DDR SDRAM/80GB Hard drive. The blue screen that says "hp invent", my guess would be a logo screen.I talk with a guy from Hp that said it may be the motherboard. He had me remove the CMOS battery, the memory chip and hold down the power button(for 1 minute), then reinstall them. But neither one of the solution resolved the problem.

My son told me prior to the blue screen, the computer was working fine. Then a box appear that told him to shut down the computer, which he did, but the computer would not come back up.Let me know if you need more info. Thanks a lot! You all have been great.

One other thing I forgot to mention, before this happen, programs would take long to load up, it seem to me the hard drive light was always on. I thought about adding more memory, but never got around to it.

When you removed the battery and held down the power switch, did you unplug the computer first?? If you didn't, you may not have reset the BIOS....

When you get home, try disconnecting the hard drive and running the computer. If it takes you past the HP logo screen, it means the hard drive is probably the problem. If you have a floppy boot disk, try running it and see if it will take you to an A: prompt. You can download a program to make one from Bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com) . If you are able to boot to floppy, you will probably need to find out what brand your hard drive is, download the diagnostic utilities for it and run them to see if the drive is bad....

FWIW
I had an old Dell that did the same thing. Freeze on the splash screen. Wouldn't go into Windows and would stall out when trying to go into setup also.

Turned out to be the motherboard.

2 days ago I removed the hard drive and test it in another computer, and it failed. So I borrow the hard drive from that computer and test it in my computer and it still made that grinding sound, but it came up and I was able to partition and format it. So I'm going to replace the hard drive and consider replacing that motherboard too. So thanks to all of you , you've been a great help.
