View Full Version : USB or Ethernet?

This might not fall in this forum category but that's where it's going for now anyways...

I do not own an ethernet card at the moment. I have TimeWarner Roadrunner cable. My modem is using the USB connection instead of Ethernet to my PC. I noticed my latency is high in starcraft which causes me to "lag out" of the game sometimes, but nearly every game I lag somewhat. I'm wondering if using USB would affect this problem at all. I also have my IntelliMouse on a USB connection. I have a printer and a webcam connected using USB also, but they're not running during gameplay.

I realize that there are most likely bottled-necked nodes from my computer to bNet, but I also do not download things from the web as fast as some of my friends with the same service as me.

Fill me in with your thoughts and ideas please.

Thanks
-Joe

I would say it is a good possibility that the USB is the bottle neck, are the camera and printer actually disconnected or just not running...if they are still attached they will draw some power still, not quite as much as if they where running but still some. You could try adding a powered USB hub.

I'll keep the cam and printer unplugged for a while and see if I notice any difference. Thanks

For less than the price of the USB Hub you can install a NIC
It will improve your online speed .
If you have an open pci slot .
The cable should be included in the install kit.

I got about 30% increase in transfer speed and a lot less lag going form usb to nic using TW

Thanks Rick! Thats the answer I was hoping for. I lag quite a bit in starcraft and it bothers me being connected multiple times when I play. I hope an ethernet card will help solve my little problems.

Thanks,

From the Start/Run command "ping" to various sites and check your overall latency.

Gotta agree with others here you're better off witha NIC
