I have an LG Electronics CD Writer (model CED-8083B) which comes with Adaptec (now Roxio,I believe) software. Up until now, I have been able to write CDR's and CDRW's without any problems (except for some unbranded disc's where I have to reduce the write speed). Recently, however, I have had a problem with one suppliers unbranded CD's, so I bought some TDK CDRW's (speed 12X) but STILL have the same problem. As a cross check, I've made sure that I can still read and write previously used CDRW's and these are fine, so I'm very confused as to what the problem is !!! In the DirectCD (which formats the disc so that files can be written using Windows Explorer) it displays an error dialog for literally about 3 seconds ! I THINK it says:
-----------------------------
"Error: Get Media Information
Illegal request (0x8052400)
You will not be able to read and write to the disc through drive letter access"
-----------------------------
Under properties, it shows it as a blank recordable CD with free space of 648Mb.

In Easy CD Creator (version 3.5C), trying to copy a file using the two phase "Test and Create CD" process results in the Test phase going OK, but fails on the Write phase (even using the lowest write speed). The error log created is as follows:-
----------------------
04:27:15 PM,April 17, 2004
Start disc creation - device:1
File system file : C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CDWO0001.TMP
Track buffer file : C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CDWO0002.TMP

End disc creation
04:27:30 PM,April 17, 2004

End disc creation
-----------------------

Can anybody tell me whats going on and how to correct it.

It's probably broken. Try it in a different PC or just go get another cheap CD-RW.

I have tried it attached to both my laptop and my desk PC - results are the same. Bear in mind that earlier CDRW's work fine, so I doubt that it is the CD writer hardware - more likely that it's these CD's and the software setup ? I notice that the TDK's are 700Mb rather than 640Mb - could this be the reason (although I believe that the unbranded that I tried WERE 640Mb, so that wouldn't make sense then) Very confused !!!!!

I would think this is bad CD-RW. The read mechanism is ok and the write mechanisim is bad. Is this internal or external?

Though I've never used one, you could try a CD cleaner disk.

It sounds like the unit is defective as the others say but for experiment, we could try this. Uninstall the burner software, then remove the burner physically. Reboot so Windows no longer 'sees' it. Reinstall it, check BIOS to see if it is recognized, then reinstall software. Give it a try.

If it is happening on 2 pc's it is most likely a fruitless venture though. Recite an eulogy on your way to drop it by the curbside pickup (or dumpster) with it if you feel the need... :(

My Hewlett Packard CD-RW drive supports 10 speed re-writing.
If I try to use 12 speed CD-RW disks a warning window says these disks are "not supported".

They said they could not guarrantee [I cannot remember the exact term used] that the drive would work with 80 min CD's [700 MB], because it had not been tested with these.
I find that 80 min disks work just fine.

Firmware was released by Hewlett Packard because the drive would not work with TDK disks.
When I installed the firmware it worked well with TDK disks.

Does such info help?

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions. I went to the Roxio website and looked at the forums there. Although they have forums for Adaptec versions 4, 5 6 and 7, there was none for 3.x, but I looked at the version 4 forum and found a reply to a posting that said that 700 Mb CD's were not supported by version 4. So, obviously, they won't be supported in version 3.5 (which is what I've got) So, I returned the TDK's to the shop and got my money back. I suspect the unbranded disc were also 700 Mb, but I don't know. From now on, I'll only buy 650Mb's (as long as they're offered ...... !) Thanks to all !

Were you actually able to burn 650 MB CD's?

CD tracks are spiral and the 80 min discs have a tighter track pitch than the 70 min disc. Newer burners have no trouble reading or writing either one.

I just today bought a 52X CD burner for $10 after rebates. I don't have any 10X burners left. They have all burned up long ago.
