A Win2K machine (clean install) always starts OK in safe mode but usually fails in normal mode. What happens is that just when the default blue screen and ctrl+alt+del would normally appear (and the monitor click off and on), the screen goes black and stays that way. This never happens in safe mode.
Any tips would be very much appreciated.

Sounds like maybe the refresh rate for the video is wrong; try reinstalling the viedo drivers (try resetting the driver in Safe mode to some thing basic first)...look for the latest drivers and install them, making sure you get the Win2k package.
