A couple websites won't work when using Java in IE 6.0. I went to troubleshooting and it said to download the Virtual Machine, when i tried it it would download about 700K, then stop loading. Tried it at different times to see if maybe it was just the server being overloaded, but no difference. I tried downloading at least three different things from different sites, and all did the same thing. I have DSL, and my other comp will download at about 120K a sec, while this one will DL at around 30K. Both are hooked up to the router the same, no hubs or switches between them. Please help.

Another thing i forgot to mention is I have had this comp for two years, and never had any problems until I bought a new video card. Could this be the problem, do i need to get updated drivers for it? Where would i get these?

The video card should be causing slow downloads, unless maybe it sharing an IRQ with the NIC and causing a problem....check in device manager and see if there are any conflicts.

Updated drivers should be available at the manufacturers website...what kind of card is it?

Is this a download from the regular windows update site that will install it when it is finished downloading or is it an installable package? And how big is it?

Won't really help your problem but just thought I would put this out there...

You are running a 550 k6-2... if you move the jumper on the motherboard from 5.5x to 2x, the processor should detect it as 6x. A really easy way to get an extra 50mhz and being that it is less than a 10% increase over what your processor is rated for, you won't be doing any damage. A good case fan, good size heatsink, and a good fan on the heat sink will insure that.

You won't be overclocking the front side bus or affecting the PCI bus so don't worry about "damaging" anything.

Sorry to be unrelated but i saw K6-2 in the subject...

Ok. It is an ATI Rage Fury Pro 32 MB video card. I went and ran all the test on the card that come with it, and everything checked out fine. It is using IRQ 11, NIC is using IRQ 10. I went to the website and tried to download new drivers, mine are dated 2-7-2001, and it started downloading the stopped after 700K, file is 12.27MB to DL. This was a 'save to disk' file, tried to download newer version of Directx ( i have 8.0) which is a run and install file, and it did the same thing.

Psabi.....thanks for the info, it is why i put K6-2 in the topic http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I too have had problems downloading a few things yesterday for microsoft. I was looking for direct x from them and it failed repeatedly. Instead went to www.download.com (http://www.download.com) and all is well

Indecision may or may not be my problem

This has been going on for a week now, and from all different websites, not just MS. Another thing that might make a difference is when i would turn on the comp, as the system tray was loading, first the task manager comes in the picture, followed by the sound speaker, then the icon for ATI which is the video card, and as soon as this icon appeared, and little box would come up with the advertising for the video card, and make a noise, then disappear, this has happened every time for the last 8 months since i have had it. Now it doesnt come up at all, and when i try to play games on www.pogo.com, (http://www.pogo.com,) it wont work and freezes up, then i press ctrl/alt/delete to bring up the box that says it is not responding, and end task, then the comp blinks and the ATI icon in the sys tray disappears, yet the comp continues to work.. Pretty weird, maybe i should reinstall the video card? I am gonna try it, have another comp to ask more questions on, haha. wish me luck.

First, check for a virus.
If none, then try this d/l utility: http://www.speedbit.com/Default.asp

Also, how much free space is on your hard drive?
I know 700KB is not that large but if there's only 100-200MB of free space left, then the swap file needs that to run properly.

I did a virus scan, and found no problems, then went to that site u suggested ski, and let me tell ya, that is awesome!! I also reinstalled my video card, and it started working again, then just downloaded the updated drivers for it, got the VM for internet explorer, and everything is working great now.
Thanks all you guys for helping me out, couldnt have done it without ya http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
