Hello-

I have recently started getting a BSOD on startup. I am not able to control/alt/delete, so I just hit the reset button. The system boots back up, and asks if I want to go into safe mode. I tell it no, and it then continues to load my OS (Win98) with no problems. I don't get this BSOD at all then while playing games/surfing. It usually only happens when I start the system up, or if I restart the system. The code it gives me is "A fatal exception 0E has occured at 0028:C001AB3A" I have checked Microsoft's website, but was not able to find this particular code. My system is custom built, and has not had this problem until a few days ago. The only thing I can even think that I've recently added was I downloaded/installed Windows Media Player 9.

Does anyone have any advice?

I found this on Google search (http://www.wintrouble.net/discus/messages/56/3019.html?1002815486), please post complete error message, I had to assume stuff to get this far.

That actually was the entire error message. Nothing about VxD or anything else of that matter. It just gave me the message and code I posted and that was it.

D/L and run Memtest-86 to check the memory.

If the RAM is ok, then hold the CTRL key during startup, and start in Safe mode.

If the BSOD does not occur in Safe mode, then select the step-by-step option from the Startup menu.
After pressing Enter, press Y for the 1st item and N for the rest. If the BSOD does not appear, then repeat the process but press Y for the 1st 2 items and N for the rest. Continue until the BSOD appears. The last item that you pressed Y for is the cause.

If that does not help, then see if a clean boot helps:
