My hp scanner previously works well. For some reasons, it does not respond. So, I re-install it. I have dual os. In Win98, after it detects the sacnner's SCSI interface card, it hangs. In Win2000, when it asks for driver and I point to the correct source, it still says cannot find it.

Hello Cycool,

You could possibly be experiencing a corrupt driver situation. If you can boot into SAFE MODE in Win98 go into DEVICE MANAGER, find the scanner and highlight, the REMOVE.

Reboot into Win98 allowing Windows to find the scanner. When prompted, say you HAVE DISK and reload from the supplied CD.

cycool,

You might be confusing the situation for yourself by posting additional information relating to the same problem in your separate post (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum15/HTML/000731.html) under OPERATING SYSTEMS.

We might need PETE to guide us here to get the best results to help you with your situation.

1st, as stated above, try to keep questions about one problem in one topic. It makes it more difficult for all of us to keep up.

2nd, as Ghost_Hacker pointed out in the other topic, win98 drivers usually will not work with win2000, you'llneed to locate drivers on the Internet and download them to that drive, especially if it's partitioned with the NTFS file system.

Same for the win98 drive, download drivers if necessary, and store them on the win98 drive, or install them from CD if you have them.

The SCSI card hanging makes me think you have an IRQ or DMA conflict, in win98 the easiest way to deal with it is usually to remove the card from Device Manager in Safe Mode, reboot and let Windows find and install it again, and if it still has problems you may have to do the same thing, then physically remove the card and swap it to a different slot so windows will assign it different resources.

For the win2000 problem of not finding the drivers, make sure you get drivers specifically written for win2000 and store them on the same drive the OS is on. They usually need to be unzipped first, most driver sites post instructions. Also check Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List (http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/howtobuy/upgrading/compat/default.asp) and be sure the card will work with win2000 or NT.

Sorry for posting into 2 separate forums. At the beginning, because of the SCSI card problem, I thought my win98 is too messy and needs to be cleaned. Therefore, I thought of creating 2 os in 2 hard drive. Obviously the new win2000 still has problems. That's why I ask if I can have 2 win98. My ultimate aim is to clean up my old win98 and maintain 1 clean os with bare essentials while messing the other. 8-).

I will try win2000 first. Unfortunately, the adpater is not supported anymore. They have a single version of driver. Fingers crossed
