I am setting up w98se on a compaq deskpro 233. having started it with windows start disc, it loads the cd drivers and the install goes well, but after it restarts at the end of the install, and starts to set up hardware, the CD rom no longer works so the dll's cannot be found on the windows cd.
help.

The MS knowledge base article makes very interesting reading Quantax, as do the follow up articles. It demonstrates the vagaries of Windows 98.
I have lost count of the number of PCs with Windows 98 I've worked on and never experienced Vic 970s problem (other than faulty brand new CD roms).
It just goes to show there is always more to learn. When you think you fully understand a system - bam along comes something new.
The article may well show the way to a solution. Lets know how you come on Vic 970!
Thanks :)

well the workaround was to enable both IDE channels, and it was set at default, so I did that, made no difference however. meanwhile I was looking for drivers on the net, and found a pagefull for compaq. I guessed at one of those, d/l it and installed it and the CD rom is now working. however both primary IDE channel & secondary IDE channel are showing faults in device manager, and state that they are faulty or drivers not installed.

I would try a newer CD ROM. I think you have an old dinosaur your trying to install.

Variable is probably right
an old dinosaur
You will struggle to find suitable drivers for that CD rom - unless you are enjoying the challenge, (which we do at times, don't we?) try a later model.
Thanks:)

also it was not showing in device manager, but was in my computer and could be accessed.
I used a spare hdd and took a copy of everything on my other compaq deskpro 4000. then copied that onto the pc that I'm trying to set up. still the IDE channels showed faults, but that was no surprise.
thing was that I was trying to install a modem and couldn't access the CD rom (or at least sometimes I thought I did.)
goingback to the 'fix' another one was to use generic drivers from startup disc by copying them in DOS. so I did that, it did work but still not shown in DM.
so I got another CD rom 24x instead of the 8x compaq. and fitted that, it is shown in DM and My computer, but I now have only 1 fault which is in advance management support. but whenever I try to access the CD now it comes up D not ready.
also the graphics are now poor.
