Hello
Some time ago i installed(enabled) the CMD ATA100 controller
on my m.board, an ASUS CUBX. It seems to be running OK. And
i can see no varnings in device manager.
But in the three days since i installed it,i have had five
lockups of my system. They can happen anytime.
First time when connected to internet. Second time writing
some text in notebook. Third time when using image browser.
Fourth time when recording some video with my Matrox Video
Card. And the last time when working in my image editing
program.
So as you can see, no clue from this. But i guess it must be
related to the Controller. My computer just suddenly locks,
and i can't do anything. There is no errormessage. Can't use
Alt-Control-Delete. Have to use Restart button.
I would appreciate any ideas as to what can cause this.
Of course i could disable the controller(remove the driver)and
see if that helps, then i will know. But i like to use it, so
maybe something can be done? Will come back with details
of system if you want.

Very possibly an IRQ conflict issue. Power down, switch around PCI slots with the Controller Card and see if it will help.
Luck.

If you have the manual for the MB look for a page with the Interrupt Request Table. I suspect that you will find some Hardware Sharing...this goes beyond IRQs. Look for INT-A,B,C etc., on the top line and follow down to show which slots hardware share. RD is on the right track here with conflicting resources. I don't know that Hardware Sharing conflicts get recognized in the Device Manager...they seem to show up as lockups etc.
Since your HDD on the ATA Controller will be commanding a lot of attention just about anything Hardware Sharing with it would most likely produce your problem.
If musical slots doesn't produce joy, then I would suggest calling ASUS Tech-Support, explain your set up and ask them what to put where.

Thank you for your replies.
I'm sorry, i should have explained more clearly that the
CMD-controller is integrated on the motherboard,so no card
to move around. Only one of my six PCI slots is occupied,
by a network card. So it looks like no conflict there.
Just before i enabled the ATA controller i upgraded from a
650MHz/100MHzFsb to a 850MHz. I did not detect any problems.
Also increased memory to 256MB.
In BIOS i have the IRQ config. set to [Auto].
It's funny, when i used the regular IDE channels only,i had
it set to [N/A]not available. My mistake, but all worked well,
i don't know why.
What about the graphics card? Going to ATA100 should not
cause any problem with that should it?
The mysterious thing is why it works OK for hours, and then
suddenly not.
I have to think about this some more. Maybe i will try the
ASUS support. Don't know how supportive they are, have
never used them.
And have a nice you know what...

According to Tom's Hardware Guide, the BX chipset on the ASUS CUBX MB does not support ATA/66 or ATA/100 architecture??? The only reason they put the controller on the MB is to allow it to support 8 drives. If you're using an ATA/66 or ATA/100 hard drive, then this may be the problem.
Did you try reverting back to the original configuration with the ATA/100 controller disabled?

Hello 'ski'
I don't think it's the BX chipset. It may have been a limitation
in the CMD controller in the first version. But the drivers have been updated several times and supports ATA100/DMA5 mode.
And according to other users of the CUBX board it works, both with
the CMD and with a separate Promise ATA100 card.
I have not gone back to old settings yet. It has not happened anything now for a couple of days, so i'll wait and see. But the lockups
is still a mystery.

If the hard drive is either ATA/66 or ATA/100, make sure you're using an 80 wire IDE cable. The standard 40 wire IDE cable can cause data to get corrupted during transfers.
