:(

Ok, I was trying to burn a CD just by using the windows burner or whatever is the default cd burner, and it didn't work. So I grabbed my dad's Dell laptop's install cd and got tremendous amounts of errors. The uninstall froze at 99 or 100% and I had to control alt delete it. After that I finally found my sony drivers CD that would fix my wondows burner problem and allow iTunes to do it's thing. But the problem... my CD drives are not recognized, they don't show up anywhere except the bios.

plz help
sony's site doesn't fix anyhting

thanks

KC:

What OS are you using? How old id your Dsd's laptop. Some of the older versions of EZ CD creator are not compatible with XP.

We need a whole lot more info...

I don't know offhand how to recover from the problem, but I do know how you can avoid a repeat.

The easy way out of sofware hell is to have a backup of the C: partition waiting in reserve.
If nothing better appeals to you it's always possible to:
--------------------------------------------------------
Re-format the C: drive and restore a suitable backup
--------------------------------------------------------
If you have a number of backups taken at different points in time and a log of all the backups and restores and installs and uninstalls and configuration changes and registry hacks etc, you can take your pick of which suits your mood or needs.

In your place you would "jump back" to the time before you ....
took some rather unwise steps shall we say?

Then having learned from the experience you can have another try with the benefit of your increased knowledge and understanding.
Second time around [or even 3rd or 4th] you will make a much better job of it with no trauma involved.

Now I'll get my thinking cap on to see if I can think of an immediate fix.

QUESTIONS
1. Which Operating System? WinXP?
2. What was your dad's CD used to do?

WinXP, and the CD was a Dell Applications CD for "Installation/Re-Installation of Easy CD Creator 5.2 Basic." Now I'm figuring that since this came with the laptop it might also contain the drivers needed for the laptops CD burner. Probably was an unwise decision but I was angry at apple because of their dumb AAC coding. So, is there a way I can remove all the cd drive drivers, let windows recognize the drive and install what's necessary for it to run then use my Sony drivers CD install the correct drivers?

Then I'm going to need to back-up everything when I get this working.

Lets go and remove all traces of E-Z CD creator. and see if that helps with drives...

Ok, I've removed just about everything I can. Any place I can download new drivers? Once again sony's site didn't help much.:(

You should NOT need drivers for Windows XP.
Do you have a Windows 98 boot disk?
I would try to boot up with a Windows 98 boot disk and use CD-ROM support, and see if it recognizes the drive. If it does, we can eliminate the drive as a problem and work on Windows issues.

No, I don't have a win98 boot disk.

here's the error device manager is giving me on both of them:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

You can download a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com,,

Edit, link bad, will try again.

Try this: http://www.bootdisk.com/
much better!:D

When you decide its time to install the drivers, you need to point the wizard at the ".inf" file for the Sony[?] CD-drive.

It would help if you browsed to look for that file and knew its location.
You could use the "Find" facility on a working PC to search the likely CD for "*.inf" [all files ending in .inf], and see if the folder names give you a clue as to which is the correct folder holding the ".inf" and all the other files.

It would be smart to use the Windows Startup disk to first test that the drive is mechanically functional.

Well I must have alzheimers at an early age because I could have sworn I installed some drivers off that sony cd, but no it's only some free burning software and the only .inf file is autorun.inf.:(

Also if anyone remembers from a post I made several months age my floppy drive is defective:D , so I have no forms of doing anything until I get a new floppy :'(

Also, I was thinking of something but I'm not sure how to go about doing it...
I've got a new blank WD 40gb hd just sitting on my primary slave. I'm wondering can I install windows on that drive then copy all my necessary photoshop files, music, downloads, programs, just about everything except the stuff I don't want or need then erase the original and make the original the slave and use for extra space?

I really don't want to erase, I've got way too much on here to loose.

]thanks[

What's the point in doing that?

There's probably nothing wrong with your existing windows installation, and if there was you could fix it by doing a "repair" re-install of XP.

The real solution is to find and install the drivers for the CD-drive. :)

And before you do that you should fix the FDD.

You should also get the necessary hardware & software for a system of backup.
It's a real godsend. I'm doing some interesting things with my backups immediately before typing this this. They have got me out of some tricky situations. :D

I don't think you nee drivers for a CD-ROm in Windows XP.

It is more likely to be a cable/MB issue, especially if floppy also is an problem. And Classic is right, XP has most drivers included.

What's the point in doing that?

I don't know it was just a thought.

The thing is I don't know where to get the drivers. That's what I've been trying to ask is where I can find them. Sony;s site didn't help much.

Ummm. You don't need any drivers. Windows XP will recognize the CD drives and install the correct drivers without any help or interference from you.

That is presuming that the drives are jumpered and cabled correctly and that they are not defective.

Get one of your friends with Win98 to make a StartUp disk for you and see if the CD drives are working.

Order a floppy drive from NewEgg for about $10.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

And I know you don't need any drivers for xp. I'll shut down, check the jumpers and plug-ins get another $10 drive from newegg and hoow that up and see what happens.
