View Full Version : New HD, Device Manager Fine but no icon on My computer
I have just wired up a new SATA HD and it is being picked up by my Device Manager as being working properly. However, no icon is there on the My Computer screen and I can't find the HD anywhere.
Any idea as to how I can fix this problem?
Any help would be great.
Thanks

What operating system? What motherboard? Have you installed drivers for the SATA controller?
Has the drive been partitioned and formatted?
If using XP/2K, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management. See if there is an unallocated drive. If so, right click it and partition and format as you like.
XP with Service Pack 1.
I haven't done anything with the hard drive yet just connected it up.
When I go to the screen you informed...
it is set up as disk 1, and is showing allocated.
I am a total newbie at this so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

it is set up as disk 1, and is showing allocated. In this screen, does it have a drive letter? Is it formatted? Does it say FAT32 or NTFS? If not, right click on the drive. There are options to partition and format the drive.

sorry about that it is showing as unallocated.
In the left box it is showing as
Disk 1
Basic
189.92GB
Online
and in the left box...
189.92GB
Unallocated

Right click and partition it how you would like. Then do the same to format.:)
That has worked, Thank You very much.
Greatly appreciated.
If this wasn't an Internet forum I would happily buy you a drink.
