I have just purchased a optical mouse - I thought the old normal ps2 mouse was faulty. Something seems to be interupting the movement, there has been times when its moved on its own whats going?

two possible reasons...

1) some kind of spyware/malware on your PC
2) extremely strong radio interference around your mouse. This happened to me when I put a cellphone next to the mouse - pointer moved while transmitter in the cell phone operated (and could be heard on audio equipment).

Also, shut down your antivirus program if it's running in the background.

sounds a bit dodgy shuting the antivirus down - Ive used norton 2004 since december without any problems

Your choice, but process of elimination is the best method to find the cause.

Yoda,

..until they crop up... One slips through accidentally and next thing you know is, they're scamperin' all over the place!

Is it a scroll mouse? The scroll wheel can suddenly change (not a prob usually) and it affects the screen viewed at the time also. There's lot's of variables.

Make sure you have removed the old mouse from Device Manager and check the resources to be sure it isn't using the same IRQ as a modem, keyboard or sound card. Mouse usually should be on IRQ 12 if it's PS/2, if it's USB capable you might try it in a USB port.

I also agree with the possibility of trojan or other malware, due to the comment about the mouse moving on its own. That can also happen if you bump the cable though, the optical mouse is a lot more sensitive to slight movement than a ball type mouse. Mine moves all the time when I shift in my chair because my leg hits the cable.

What are you moving the mouse upon, a pad, a NEW pad?

If it's the desk top, is it translucent or have nice coat of urithane or finish on it?? Try this in any case: tape a plain white piece copier paper to the desk surface, (FTT: not on the monitor screen at desk-top, right? right), and use the mouse there and see if things improve.

yep, with Rice-a-Roni it's called 'the real' San Francisco treat :p . (You have to be old enough to remember the Rice-a-Roni TV commercials to get that one....)
