This maybe a premature question since I don't have any valid details, but I'll ask anyways just in case someone out there might know.
I just had a friend call me up from her work and told me that she was at her front counter talking to a customer and all of a sudden her computer made a loud "pop" noise, kinda like a gun shot. She said her monitor went black and she ran over and unplugged the computer, and is now afraid to power it back on. Anyone ever heard of something like this happening? She said someone in the office said it probably was the power supply, but I didn't think so.

Hmm, power supply would be my first guess. I think you or whoever should take the case off and have a look.

Power supply. I mean, I can't tell you for sure that's what happened in this case (no pun intended) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif , but the only time I've ever heard a loud "pop" from a computer (sounded like a loud cap gun) it was the power supply. I had the case off, and I saw the blue flash in the power supply cover.

Could also be the monitor...same thing power supply but with a monitor the cheaper fix is to replace it.

I think iisbob should comment on the the popping part of the power supply...heheh.

I think a new ps is a bit of a high price to get the cat off the monitor but maybe you can send out the recording.

We get this every month or so in the shop where I work. It keeps us all on our toes. Anything which has a 115vac input (power supply or monitor) is subject to similar afflictions. The problem usually turns out to be a short varister, which only stays shorted for as much time as it takes to explode, at which point it becomes an open.

I guess you might as well call it a fuse. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

THERE IS AN EXPLANATION FOR SUCH SOUND. IN REALITY COULD BE 2 OF THEM. IF SOUND CAME OUT FROM YOUR MONITOR THERE IS A PEACE OF ELECTRONIC INSIDE IT CALLED THE FLYBACK. THIS UNIT IS A STEP UP XNSFORMER TO INCREASY SCREEN VOLTAGE UP TO AROUND 30,000VOLTS TO LIGHT UP THE PHOSFOR OF THE SCREEN. SOMETIME IT BREAKS WHILE IN OPERATION AND CAUSES THIS SOUND. IT WLL COME WITH A LITLE SMOKE AND A SMELL LIKE OSONE.
THE SECOND POSIBILITY IF IT WAS ON THE POWER SUPPLY CHANCES ARE THAT A CAPACITOR BLOW UP INSIDE IT. THIS UNITS HOLD VOLTAGE ON THEM TO RELEASE TO OTHER PARTS OF THE ELECTRONIC.SOMETIME DUE TO LONG EXTENDED PERIODS OF WORKING TIME THEY GET DRY AND EXLODE. THE SOUND THEY PRODUCE AT THAT TIME BELIEVE ME ITS REALLY LOUD. WHEN OPEN THE P/S ALL ITS INSIDE DIELECTRIC MATERIAL WLL BE ALL AROUND THE UNIT. THAT EASY TO IDENTIFY..THOSE 2 PARTS WHICH ARE ALSO PARTS OF ANY PC TODAY ARE RESPONSIBLE OF THAT TYPE OF SOUND
