Im anticipatin that I will end up with another computer in my lap, It has a K6 400 mghz(i think) computer that encountered a Vfat error. The person has bought a new WD 40 gig HD and has tried to install it but He said it sees 36gig of it during setup. He cannot get the pc to recognize his cdrom so cannot install Win98. I have searched the database here and havent found this exact problem. I dont know or remember what limitations the K6 and motherboard combo had for upgrades in general. Just thought I would put the question out for possible solutions. I have a few ideas but just wanted to ask before I set out to fix it. Thanks alot

Hey Hippo,

More than likely, the BIOS is limited in the size of harddrive that it will recognize. There are two workarounds for that. Either use the EZ-BIOS that comes with the new harddrive, which is Dynamic Drive Overlay software, and is usually not recommended, or purchase a separate controller card that will allow the full capacity of the harddrive to be used.

As for the CD-ROM, first make sure it is hooked up correctly and jumpered correctly for whatever position you have it in. For example, if the CD-ROM is hooked up to the secondary IDE channel, with nothing else on the channel, then it should be hooked up to the end connector on the ribbon cable and jumpered as Master.

Then, go to www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com) and download the necessary software to create a WIN98 bootable floppy disk with CD-ROM support.

Good luck. Post back if this is unclear of further questions arise.
