My son's Lexmark 1150 printer wouldn't print after he had added some extra memory to his Emachine G2341 which is a basic model.

He uninstalled the software, then when he tried to re-install it keeps saying check the connections, which he has done repeatedly (everywhichway).

Any suggestions anyone?

Welcome to the PC Guide Forums!
You did not post the Operating System your son is using.

I would suggest booting into SAFE mode and going into Device Manager, remove the entries for printers there and reboot, it should then detect the printer is connected and then ask for the software. It may be a ghost driver issue, this would remove any of those.

He is using XP. I am not near to him but I feel he is not sufficiently
knowledgeable to go into safe mode and perform the operation you suggest. Is it not possible he could disturb something else during the process without a step by step instruction?

Also when you install the software for Lexmark
Follow the install order exactly as instructed in the original documentation

On some of the models You MUST install the software before connecting the printer

As stated above
Remove all OLD printer drivers and software before attempting a reinstall.
Use the lexmark uninstall program and/or add/remove programs icon in control panel..

Then reboot .
If the lexmark install requires the software first.
Then install it and when prompted to connect the printer
Do so and wait for it to finish the connection check at that time.

It should find the connection and install the remainder of the software programs..

Do Not use the windows device wizard unless your documentation tells you to.

Many thanks. He is looking up the instructions. He did go through the uninstall procedure via contol panel, and checked that it was removed from the list.

I believe he installed the software with the printer connected, so he is now checking the instructions ( or looking for them to check)

Rick

They followed the instructions to the book. When they get to the part of the installation program which says 'install' this is where it says 'CHECK the connections. In otherwords you can't go any further.

I asked him if there wasn't a window came up at the bottom of the monitor saying 'New Hardware detected' which it should if you connect something and there is no back up installation. He said no.

Could it be a faulty usb cable?

Let's see:

1) Everything Works Fine

2) Add more RAM

3) Problems start.

UMM??? COULD IT BE THE RAM!!!!!!

Why not :

1) Remove all traces of the printer.

2) Re-boot

3) Shutdown.

4) Remove new RAM

5) Re-start Windows.

6) Shutdown.

7) Re-install printer.

If everything works, it was the RAM. That's where I would start since that's where your problem started.

Calssicsoftware: I can understand the logic to your reasoning with regrds to how the problem first appeared but can't see how the 'ram' as everything else works would cause the installation program to identify the 'connections' to be the problem.

I suppose anything is worth a try. He lives where it is is five hours behind me so will have to wait until later to call him.

When one uses the 'uninstall' program in Control Panel surely this should remove ALL traces of the printer's origianl installation.

However, I am wondering if the 'failed' attempts since - that is getting it so far to where it comments on 'check the connection'has added something of the installation. How can one check for this? Nothing shows in the Control Panel now.

Thanks all for your patient help with an 'un-tech guy

1) Remove all traces of the printer.

Boor into safe mode and remove all traces of the printer in device manager.

and yes RAM can do this, it may be interfering with the USB as nothing USB works.

I had the same problem with a different model Lexmark, but I'll go a step farther than Rick in saying you not only have to be exact on the instructions, but since I had the same problem with mine, it didn't clear until Lexmark told me that (in my situation anyway) I not only had to keep it disconnected until I got the screen box telling me to connect it, but I had to keep the PC end of the cable disconnected, not the connection at the printer.
