Hi,an anyone help?

My CD burner and DVD have both just vanished.

They are not in MY COMPUTER or in DEVICE MANAGER (which is also missing my hard drive).I have tried add new hardware, but they are not on the system.
I have checked the bios/set up and they are both listed there.
If I boot from a floppy I can view their directories.
They seem to be missing just in windows(98).
Under the performance tab my Hard drive (c) is using ms dos compatibility mode file system (whatever that is)
Any ideas?

Thanks for any help
Chris

For the disappearing CD-RW and DVD-ROM problem, go to Start/Run, type regedit, click OK, click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Service/VxD, click on IOS to highlight it, on the right side of the screen look under the Name column for the value "NoIDE".
If it's there, then right click on it, click Delete, click OK or Yes at the warning, exit Registry Editor, and restart your computer.
If that does not work or if the "NoIDE" value is not there, then update your AV program with the latest files, and do a virus search.

For the DOS compatibility mode problem with the HD, see if anything here helps:

You're welcome.
A virus can also cause that problem. Update your AV program, and let us know if a virus search finds anything.

Are the drives enabled in BIOS?

Moonlit Rain

Yeah, I updated the definitions and found a start page trojan.
still no CD or dvd

I'm not really up with config.sys etc, but would replacing the file in c: with the one from a start up disk make any difference OR puting a CD driver file in c:?
Sorry if thats dumb:confused:

Did you restart the computer after getting rid of the trojan?

If so and the problem happened within the last 5 days, then restart again but hold down the Ctrl key during startup, select 'Command prompt only' using the arrow keys from the startup menu, press Enter, at the C:\> prompt type scanreg /restore and press Enter, select a Registry that predates the problem, and press Enter.

Hi 12345
It's a Dell so the set up page is a bit strange.

The HD,DVD & CD burner are all set to AUTO in the ide settings.

I hate the way Dell get into everything..... bios, start up screens, parts made just for them etc etc

Hi Ski

Did the SCanreg / Restore thing, but nothing.

I thought that would cure it, as I only got the problem two nights ago.

I know a format would most likely cure this but I've got a lot of songs that I've written over the past year or so on the Hard drive.

See if these AV utilities find anything that yours did not:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

And D/L and run Ad-aware, Spybot, and CWShredder.

If no luck with them, then run 'Hijack This', and post its findings here.

Also, normally a drive will be recognized in BIOS when things are ok with the drive, and its cables and connections.
But I've seen where Windows can have problems seeing a drive if there's a hardware problem with it.
So to leave no stone unturned, make sure all of the drives' connections are secure, try a different known working IDE cable, and try a different power lead.

And check the link for your DOS compatibility problem with the HD. It may also apply to the optical drives' problem.

Thanks Ski

I'll do all that and post the results tomorrow night (UK time).

I had a few problems with my old Dell. The BIOS does look strange compared to other computers....

Ran spybot,adaware,cw shredder,panda.
Lots of malware and start page, browser highjackers.

Nothing I could see that would attack the cd & dvd roms

I notice you still have "about blank" which is a problem homepage hijacker, apparently able to defy CW Shredder. There is, however, another program called "About buster" you might check into. I read about it on www.spywareinfo.com and downloaded it just in case I'd need it sometime.

Fix these 2 in Hijack This:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DXM6Patch_981116] C:\WINDOWS\p_981116.exe /Q:A (file left over from a DirectX upgrade)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winmain] winmain.exe (malware)

You're welcome.
Sometimes one has to bite the bullet, and reformat and reinstall to get things working. But glad to hear that it resolved your problem.
