Did you install an entire new cartridge assembly which has the ink tanks and the print head, or just the ink tanks?

If you replaced just the ink tanks, then the old print head may be clogged. See if cleaning it using the printer's software helps. If not, then you may have to replace the whole cartridge assembly.

If you replaced the entire cartridge assembly and you're using Win 98 and the printer is connectd to a parallel port, then hold down the Ctrl key during startup, select 'Command prompt only' from the startup menu, press Enter, at the C:\> prompt type dir>LPT1 and press Enter.

If it does not work, then either the printer, its cable, or its port is bad. Also, if the printer uses a parallel port then in BIOS make sure the port is not disabled and it's assigned 'ECP + EPP'.

If it works at the command prompt, then uninstall and reinstall the printer's software.
Also, make sure it's configured as the default printer in Windows.

Thanx Ski.I only installed the black cartridge, the printer automatically enters a cleaning procedure every time it is shut down and reopened. I will try to remove the printer head but am not quite sure of the proceedure, did not get a manual with the printer

You're welcome.

The following link has a user's manual for your printer. It's the next to last item on the bottom of the page.

If you're referring to opening up the .pdf file for the user's manual, then do you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your system?

I accessed the Cannon site via your link! and then went to the tech questions site and asked for help with my problem and it kept asking me to repeat the problem. I could not down load the manual. I do not know why because it did not/would not down load :)

What browser? If IE, right click the link and click "Save As", try to open the file once saved. I'm not on Firefox now, but I think it's "Save Link As" with that browser. Check the right click options, it should be fairly apparent which option you want to be able to save the file to the hard drive. Having the manual onhand is a good idea anyway...

More likely it's because you're using Acrobat 4. Many PDF files available for download these days need Acrobat 5 (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html) to open them. Check their documantation, you might need to uninstall ver 4 before installing 5, and check any program CDs you may have gotten recently, chances are some of them have Acrobat 5 on them, since many programs now include manuals on the CD in PDF format. The reader is there too so you can actually be able to read the manual...I have various versions on at least a half dozen different software CDs. I think even my motherboard CD came with a copy...
