When trying to start my system the DVD and CD-ROM lights go on and I get an intermittent tone...nothing else. The system was working yesterday until we did a shutdown. when trying to startup later in the day problem arose. Help!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

some system info would help,(Windows and all) did you do a hard shutdown or did you shut down regularly.(the proper way). Are all the fans running at start-up?
have you moved the unit around or gone inside the case?when you shut down and started up did it want to run scan disk? Can you remember anything like down loads latley,anything you may have changed? I know these may sound a little lame but all info will help in diagnosing the problem.
post back with all that and we'll see if we can't get you running.

system is using Windows 98, did a regular shutdown, when starting up all fans are running but system never wakes up....no scan disk nothing. Just this tone that is on and off....no display on the monitor. The only thing I was doing was hooking up a router to connect my other PC. The other PC is working fine, I connected both systems to be a network. The system was operating normally until after shutdown. Hope that is enough info
What mother board, chipset, CPU, etc?
How did yiou connect the router?
Did you try discoinnecting the router and seeing if you can now boot?

I am using a P3 system..I don't know what the cpu is or motheboard...I am not vey literate with these things. The router a D-LINK was connected to the modem at the wan connection and the 2 PC's were connected on the LAN ports on the router. Each PC was connected via the ethernet ports. I have disconnected all this, the computer has nothing connected to it at this time except power cord. I have disconnected all drives except hard drive. I am suspecting PS but wanted some guidance before proceeding. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

I noticed that my cpu fan is not working....I am sure this is probably the root cause of the failure sI am seeing...where do I go from here

#1 if you havent already SHUT IT DOWN.Do not run it without the fan, won't take long to fry it without a fan. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif if you have a multi meter test the power unit to see if your getting enough power and check the fan.If you can get a hold of another power supply hook it up and try it only long enough to see if the cpu fan will work if not buy a new fan.hopefully the cpu is not toast.

Some motherboards will not power up if the CPU fan is not running. This is an option in the bios. However, even with this option enabled the bois cannot shut your computer down. So, if the fan failed while you were running your computer the setting would not kick in until after you shut down the computer.
Yeah, most likely the non-working fan is the root of your problems...

Well my friends I replaced the CPU fan but problem remains. Probaly a no brainer but when I start the unit without the CPU I don't get the symptom. I am thinking my cpu is fried http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif What can I expect trying to replace the cpu...a slot PIII
OUCH! That's not good... The only other thing that will cause your computer to halt at boot-up like that (that I can think of right now) would be that your ram might not be inserted all the way in. When I installed ram on my computer I accidentally did not get it into the slot all the way and that caused my system to beep intermittenly, however, the CPU fan and all the other fans did power up.... so I would check or re-check these components
* MOBO power supply connector
* All RAM modules (make sure that all are insterted all the way)
* CPU (same as ram)
Heh, but in all honesty I am stumped.

Did you just install a Ethernet card in that computer so you could hook up to the router? If you did and it isn't fully into the slot, it could be the source of your problem. I DOUBT it is your CPU....it is VERY hard to fry an Intel PIII.....I'm more inclined to say it's your [in this order]: ethernet card, IDE cabling, Power Supply, RAM or video card causing this problem.

I am stumped myself...I wanted to fix this thing so bad, impress my son you know. Looks like I am off to the repair shop.
