US and UK are similar the main differences being the £ and the # keys.

Vic.
You need the number lock on for this : -

(ALT)0188 ¼
(ALT)0189 ½
(ALT)0190 ¾

Using the numbers on the keypad, not the normal numbers on the top row.

Lot of other special characters can be done like this. Check in Character map for the code.

How do you get fractions on a US keyboard. When I use Word some times when I use number/number it automatically converts to a fraction (looks smaller and compact) and other times it jsut stays number/number (full size).

Also how do you get the margins changed pernmanently on Word so that they stay the same for the next time I open a new page.

thanks david,

I will commit that to memory (also put a note in the drawer)

donn.

you can change the 'normal' template. which I think you are suggesting,
I think that you need to open it from explorer>prog files>office>templates. I found it a bit tricky but managed eventually.

its better though to make your own templates from scratch, do your letter headings etc, as if you were writing a letter, I found that using text boxes is the best way to do this, then click save as and change from doc to template, after that when you click on start>new document, your template will be shown with the others.
I have them for personal use, official letters, work letters, business letters etc. once you have done them, they are always there. they are easy to change to if you so wish.

after creating (re-creating) the 'normal' template, save it as 'normal...dot'

then change 'normal.dot' to 'normal..dot'

change 'normal...dot' to 'normal.dot'

delete 'normal..dot'

it may send you a bit dotty, but it works.

I just use a list of alternate characters like <blink>This Page</blink> (http://lotrscrapbook.bookloaf.net/definitions/tags.html)

And instead of using the numbers, most times I just highlight/copy/paste.

Åÿê???

This (http://www.forlang.wsu.edu/help/keyboards.asp) is the page I usually use, saved to my HDD.

Frus and Vic, thank ye, I figure out how to set the margins, I had it all along, but I failed to note that when I open a new page it centers itself on the screen which makes the margins 'look like' they are not according to the settings. But if I arrow the screen over to the left then the margins can be seen to be set the way I set them previously...little things, drove me nuts.
