View Full Version : Power's fine, but nothing's on the monitor?

I have a 4-year old computer with a loose printer port. On opening the computer and trying to adjust it, I accidentally disconnected it. I reconnected it and started up the computer only to get this: an extended beep upon booting up and no picture on the monitor (the amber standby light is on, and when I reset it, it sits blank for a while and then goes back to standby). I've tried connecting a different (brand-new) monitor and get the same thing, so that's not the problem. Any help would be appreciated!
Check to see that you haven't knocked the video card/connector loose also.....

I've checked the video card and tried it in another port to no avail. I've tried checking out everything else I could have knocked loose in there and had no luck, but I'm not all that familiar with the innards of this computer. Besides a loose video card, is there anything else that could cause these kinds of problems?

Hello martyhecla,
You probably don't want to move the Video card around into another port. I would leave your setup just as it was. You would just want to make sure that it is seated correctly. You want to do this with the power off to the board...best to use the on/off switch on the back of the computer and not just the power down button on front.
Also, be sure to static discharge yourself by touching the outside of the metal case before you dig into anything.
It would probably help if you could furnish a little more information about your computer. Brand, Motherboard, Operating System etc.

Heh, that's another problem. This is an old, off-market computer my father bought for cheap in '97... it probably fell off of a truck. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif The monitor seems to be an Axion (?) and the computer itself has no real distinguishing marks. It's worked off of Windows 95 since the day it was first installed. All I need from it really is the information on the hard drive to put on my new computer anyway. I guess I'll try again tomorrow, it's long past time for bed. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
If all you need to do is pull data from the hard drive, then you should be able to pull the drive, and hook it up as slave in the new machine and then pull the data...
