I have a asus k7v baord (bios-5/12/2000/via-kx133-k7v). running a
amd athlon 1000mhz(amd-a 1000mmr24b a) at boot I get this fault

(during last boot-up your sys. hung for an improper cpu external
speed setting. Your sys. is now working in safe mode (bus:100mhz,
dram:100mhz,pci:33mhz) To optimize the performance and reliability,
make sure the cpu speed conforms to the spec. of the cpu)

can anyone help??

thanks perry

First, make sure that the MB is configured for 'Jumper Free' mode. To do this, either check your MB's manual or view it here(requires 'Adobe Acrobat Reader')- http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/selectftp.aspx?l1_id=1&l2_id=1&l3_id=2&m_id=1&f_name=k7v-101.pdf~zaqwedc

Then, if you're using PC100 SDRAM, open the 'Advanced' section in BIOS, select 'Standard' for the 'Operating Frequency Setting', go to the 'Exit' section, select "Save Changes', and exit BIOS.

If you're using PC133 SDRAM, then in the 'Advanced' section select 'User Define' for the 'Operating Frequency Setting', select 4:3 for the 'DRAM to CPU Frequency', select '100 MHz' for the 'CPU Frequency', save the changes, and exit BIOS.

Yes it is in jumper less mode,I tried your fix and I though is was happy
with but-I am trying to setup win98 on a good formatted drive, and
it keeps freezing up

what now???

Assuming the error message has now gone, at what point in the install is the system freezing. You are sure you have the right FSB speed set ie matches your RAM modules (100 - 133 whatever) and the PCI divider is taking the PCI speed back to 33Mhz.

Also, d/l and run Memtest-86 to check the memory-
http://www.memtest86.com/
It's run in DOS from a floppy, so there's no need for an O/S to be installed. Just make sure that the floppy drive is configured ahead of the HD as a boot device in BIOS.
