View Full Version : case upgrade brings massive problems.

When installing a new case for my computer, which was operating perfectly in it's previous case, I accidentally plugged the power switch cable that connects the case to the motherboard in backwards. I actually had plugged all of the case connectors (speaker, HDD led, power led, reset) in backwards. I turned the power on, the power led flashed, the HDD led flashed, but the computer did not turn on. Puzzled, I discovered my error and corrected all of the connecting cables. After reconnecting power, I pressed the power button again and the power led stayed on, but still no boot. I was able to make the power LED turn off by holding down the power switch, as one would do to turn the computer off in case of emergency. Since installation, my computer will not boot. Fans do not turn on, no system beep, nothing.

I tried reseting CMOS, tried another working power switch (from the old case) but still the same result. Did reversing the power switch cable send bad current through my system? My mother board is getting power, there is a small led on it labeled "5VSBLED" that comes on when the power supply is turned on.

I've been testing my motherboard, and here are the results.

Test System: CPU, RAM, AGP Video Card (and monitor). All other drives disconnected from data and power connections. Motherboard is assembled outside of case, laying on cardboard to prevent shorts.

Results: After pressing the power switch, power LED comes on on case, CPU Fan spins, no initial system beep, just a series of short, lo-volume blips from the speaker. My monitor remains in sleep mode, no boot screen. After a few seconds of this, system beep comes on like "beeeeeeeeeee-da-beep."
It runs until I turn the system off by pressing the power switch briefly.

I've made case upgrades before, without any problems. I did move my PCI cards around, I also installed a new soundcard during the case upgrade. Other than that, I'm bewildered. Can this be from Electro-static discharge? I thought that I grounded myself properly by touching the metal case before touching any of the parts. Other Ideas?

Hello bklynben,

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

The momentary power supply switch you mention (i.e., connecting the case button to the motherboard) is a "dumb" switch...it doesn't care which way the power is flowing, it just makes a momentary connection to get things rolling...

Connecting backwards would not have any effect on the motherboard.

I would reseat the RAM and Video Card...

What type of BIOS does this motherboard have?
