Hello funkvibe,
How about a lookp-see at what you've got running in the background? When you do the "three finger salute" (Ctrl+Alt+Del), what shows up in the Task Menu? Would you post back at let us know?

It could be how much you have running while trying to burn...yes, burning a CD is very resource intensive, and running things that rely heavily on disk access could result in even worse things than a slow down...coasters.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention,
Does having my 40gig hard drive partitioned affect the performance of my system while burning? C: drive = 5gig, D drive = 35gig. And I have my CD-RW set as the Secondary Master, and my HD as Secondary Slave. My CD-ROM is set as Primary Master. Will changing these drives around affect overall system performance?

I hope you get a discount for buying 100 blank cd's at a time!....after all, you have that 850 Duron running at 250 mhz beyond what it is designed to run at.....this is a no brainer to me. I have run a lot of Intel's "hot" in the past; however, they were not EVER as reliable as units clocked to the right speed were. I would shut down all programs you dont have to have running in order to burn the cd and the speed will increase. One thing to consider....with CPU prices as low as they are right now [not to mention the cost of additional RAM]....why not invest in a faster "full blown" XP Athalon with about 256 or so 2100 DDR Ram and get on with it? !!

Hey Funkvibe,
Will you double check those drive settings and get back to us.
Your CD ROM is Primary Master, and your HDD is Secondary Slave????
If that is correct, I suggest switching those two around!

Also if you haven't done so already go into device manager and enable DMA for your CD-RW and your CD-ROM this might speed things up by freeing up your processor for other things

You might do all the above suggestions and find your comp still sluggish when burning. You didn't mention what burning software you're using, currently I'm using Easy CD Creator and everything else comes to a crawl when burning a disc maybe due to buffer overrun protection enabled. I usually just wait out the four minutes.

Ok, I've checked my bios settings and it says that my CD-ROM = Primary Master, and Hard Drive = Secondary Slave. So I guess I should switch that around huh... I didn't know that would make that much of a difference, but now I know. =)
...as far as software, right now I'm using Easy CD Creator 4. I've tried Nero as well and it still slows down my system.

I've recently purchased Easy CD Creator 5 which I noticed is a little bit more reliable and speedy than version 4. Might want to borrow it and give it a try. by the way, I close all programs and leave my computer idle while burning CD's, I already have enough cd drink-coasters
luck

I've read from somewhere that when you burn mp3 into cd audio format, you should be burning at 2X speed. Why is that? Can't I just burn mp3's into cd audio format at 16X speed? What's the diff between burning cd audio cd's and regular ISO data cd's?
