View Full Version : not boot, just beeps

I have been trying to build a AMD Duron based system. I have an Antec DS-282 case, a Shuttle AK31 SocketA motherboard, 256MB DDR non ECC RAM and a 800 Duron processor with heatsink and fan attached. I have built computers before, and I believe I have everything connected properly. The problem is that aside from the front lights going on and fans working, the system will only deliever a series of long beeps that does not cease until I unplug it. Since the BIOS is provided by Award which only has 1 beep code, I assumed that there was a memory problem (especially considering that one of the connectors looked damaged to begin with). After repacing the memory with an exact replacement (that also had a questionable looking connector) that didn't work, I realized that the motherboard does not support ECC memory. I finally got non ECC memory today, and I have the very same problem. I'm stuck and Shuttle won't talk to me since I didn't buy the motherboard directly from them (they may respond to my email someday!).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I got the same problem with an AK31V3.1. I think the beep code is for an award bios even though it says phoenix on it. (bad memmory or video card or even MB is what the code means... no kidding)

I replaced everything on the MB. It only beeps with duron and thunderbird even though it's supposed to work with XP as well. i even tried a PCI videocard instead of AGP same result. The only thing i did not try is a different brand of memory. The sticks i use are 512k PC2100 and work fine on other MBs. i tried just one or 2 or 3 or 4 sticks and the result is the same.

shuttle's help request for doesn't work (server in tw not found). Sent them an email... good luck.

Why are we bringing up a 3 month old post? either the person fixed the problem or is no longer interested or here? very unproductive and a waste of time and space.

YODA74, Are you a moderator of this site? No? OK I didn't think so?
Meloney ,, Here's what you do contact the memory manuf and the video card manuf and try and find a compatible MOBO for both because that is probably your problem. Good luck

well I was hoping that maybe meloney's solution will work for me too.

Apparently the beeps mean that the memory fails to initialize for various reasons. Bad memory, bad power supply, dimms not pushed down all the way etc. can all have the same outcome.
