Hi
I recently upgraded my pc from a 200MHz AMDK6 to a 900MHz Athlon processor changing everything else in the process.
On my old pc, all the cutscenes in games use to run smoothly but after upgrading my pc, the cutscenes in certains games seem to "stutter" ie pause for approximately a milisecond every few seconds and there is also some activity with the HD/CD drive at every pause (HD and CD activity light flickers).
I am using an Asus A7V133 motherboard
NVidia GeForce2 graphics card
Soundblaster Live sound card
128MB PC133 RAM
40GB ATA100 HD
16speed CD drive
Also my zip drive works very slow on my new pc.
I am assuming that the problem may lie in the following 2 areas:
motherboard cache (L2 is 256K)to small? (Old mainboard had 512K pipeline burst cache)
IDE drivers
Any suggestions/solutions as to what/why I am experiencing these performance problems?
Thanks
Rob

Here's the deal. Your new processor is not jiving with that Asus MOBO. Asus requires alot of tweaking in order to work properly. Here's what you do. Go to the google.com and type in Asuss A7V133 and 900Mhz Athlon and see what comes up mabey someone else had the same problem.

Welcome to the Forum, both of you. When we upgraded from a 166 chip to a 400, I tried putting the MS Hearts game in "Slow" mode. Got jerky, odd playing in that mode and had to return it to "normal" mode before it looked right...albeit FAST compared to what I was used to. When you say that you changed everything..did you change the OS?
We're planning to do almost exactly what you've done, so please keep us updated on progress.

Hello Shorak,
Maybe a little more system info would help. What else is different between old and new?(RAM,CD ROM,...) What is the connection configuration of HDD and CD ROM? What type connection for Zip? Does it happen in all games?
Kid, if you are going to offer help, please try to give Real help and not just direct someone to a search engine to find it themself.
You make a statement that shows you have info about Asus, then share that info.

bassman, when you say real help, do you mean asking for more system info as to stall because you don't know what you are talking about? Is that the real help you offer? A question for a question.

The only slow Item I can see in your system description is the 16x cd-rom
Is that the cd read speed or is it a cd-rw ?
Are you running the game from the Hard drive or from the cd?
Does it store files on the cd during the game?
What version of Via4in1 drivers do you have installed ?
Of those drivers did you install them in turbo mode?
Before someone asks why I am asking these questions
I’ll give you the answer.
1. Need to know to access the lag in screen updates.
2 I own and run 2 of these Mother boards and they Do NOT require a lot tweaking

When you go to the doctor does just hand you a prescription and say this will fix it? Or does he ask questions to find out what is really wrong with you?

This forum is not an EGO trip for most of the long time posters here. If you need to "Crow".....find another forum to do it on. You are on shaky ground KidGenius if you are determined to make this an EGO TRIP....trust me.........
Now....here are some new drivers for the Asus A7V133:

I changed the OS from Win95B to Win 98. The cd rom works fine as i used it on the old system.
Old Systems specs:
AMDk6 200Mhz
Sounblaster 32
Matrox Mystique 220
35MB RAM
TX Motherboard with 512K cache (not sure what make)
16 speed cd drive
2.7 GB HD (Maxtor)
Running windows 95B
New System:
AMD Athlon 900
Soundblaster live
128MB PC133 RAM
ASUS A7V133 (L1 cache 128k, L2 cache 256k)
40Gb Seagate ATA100
running Win98
I have a feeling that it might be the cache (L2) as my old motherboard had 512K and i had read somewhere that cache can can cause slowness.
I'm not sure what version of Via 4 in 1 is installed as I installed the version that came with the Motherboard. (will have to check later)
Games run off cd and HD and I have noticed the slow performance in some games but not all.
Zip drive problem was evident from day one.. I tried changing the settings in BIOS for the parallel port but this hasnt helped.
I might try and download latest versions of the ASUS IDE drivers and see if they help.
Rob
Give the new version on the Via 4in1 drivers a try
You should uninstall the old version first.
Run the 4in1 setup and select uninstall for all drivers
When you install the new drivers select turbo during the install
If you find the problem still persists .after using the new drivers.
You may want to uninstall them all again.
They allow windows to reboot and use the default ide drivers that came with 98se
After they are installed.
Run the 4in1 setup again and only install the agp drivers.
Or you can download the agp drivers alone and install only then.
