my new mb was damaged so i transfered my hdd and floppy to my old mb. My hdd have windows 2000 professional installed. when i try to boot up, it stops at the starting windows 2000 professional but doesnt reach the windows logo.

i tried booting to safe mode but it stops loading after loading the driver named agp440.sys.

i booted from recovery console and disabled agp440.sys but does no good.

BTW, my hdd's fat is NTFS so booting from a win98 boot disk doesnt help.

If you move an installation of Windows from one PC to another one (which is in effect what you have done) it is common for there to be problems in reorganising the hardware configurations to suit and a total failure to boot is common as well.

You could try booting to the Win2K installation CD (ensure your bios setup is setup for this) and trying a Repair Installatonion. Choose new installation and if it finds the old one it will prompt you as to whether you wish to repair it. Dont go into the other recovery option which is "Repair using the Recovery Console and which comes up early on in the process". If the old installation is not found then you can let it install a parallel installation onto the HDD and that will allow you to access the files on the original installation.

i dont have an installation cd. i have it in drive d which is inaccessible using the recovery console.

BTW, whats this?

install a parallel installation onto the HDD

What make/model is the PC or the motherboard. If the second partition (probably hidden or of a proprietary format) contains your installation files (as with a Compaq for example) this will probably only work with the original hardware - but might be accessible using a special setting somewhere or by the use of a proprietary floppy. The recovery console is very restricted in what it can access - possibly only the windows directory.

A parallel installation of Win2K/XP is when you install a second separate copy of the installation onto the same partition (two copies in parallel) so that you can use the second one to access the files held on the non-booting installation - particularly when this is on NTFS. If you don't have an installation CD then this is not an option.

Your OS was set up for a totally different computer, no wonder it's having trouble working in this new machine (you'd be confused if you woke up in some strangers dining room whilst they where celebrating an aunties birthday).

IMHO You need to re-install Windows so it can load all the device drivers it needs to recognise the new system that you have put it into.

PS your HDD's FAT is not NTFS!

Boot with your windows 2000 CD and repair the Windows installation. You will need the installation key.

The problem might be with the driver after agp440.sys. Its too early in the morning for me to remember things but there is another option for booting beside "safe mode", I think it is "step-by-step command". Try that to see which driver causing the error.
You might also want to check the "OS" or ""software" area of this board to see if somebody there can help you.

You can start again in Safe mode but this time go to the Run box and type in ASD(stands for automatic skip driver). That might be able to bypass the troublesome driver and get the system to boot up properly.
