I have a Laptop Compact Presario here (DEAD)

when you turn it the power the light comes one then 2-5 seconds later it
shutsdwon, during this 2-5 second there is

Nothing on the screen
no hard drive activity
no beeps
absoluttly nothing

does any one have any idea what could be wrong

one more thing, if i have not plug it in a while to try it out, instead of 2-5 secong I get 10-15 second of nothing.

THis is usually a dead battery - the control circuitry in the battery won't let the system boot if the battery is effectively dead.
How old is the system? two or three years is all you can really expect from a battery.

One thing you could try is to remove the battery, and try booting with the power supply attached.
I've got a system here which had the same symptoms, and the battery wasn dead. If I remove the battery, the system will work fine from the PSU, but will not boot if the battery is attached.
