I've been trying to fix my computer for several hours now, and I just ran across this forum, and I was hoping you guys could help me out. Bottom line, my computer won't boot, won't POST - in fact, it doesn't do a damn thing when you push the power the button. So, how did I find myself in this mess?

My PC has been sitting in my closet for the last 12 months, since I didn't want to be distracted by the temptation of various video games. However, I'm on break from school now, so I thought I'd give it a go. Much to my surprise, I plugged it in, attached the monitor, and voila, I was good to go. I messed around with it, updating Win2k, and otherwise getting it in order. However, when I went to plug in my speakers to the sound card, the card got dislodged from the motherboard. This is where my problems began.

After shutting down the computer, I opened up the case and reseated the sound card which had become almost entirely dislodged from the PCI slot. I plugged the card back in, and and gave the screw a little extra tightening to make sure this didn't happen again. I closed up the case, and hit the power button. Nada. I hit it again. Nada. With a sigh, I reopened the case, and looked to make sure all the cables were where they should be. Everything appears to be in place, including the power cables and all the jumpers. I'm totally confused. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Regards,

Ben

Was any portion of the mBoard damaged (that you could/can see) in the process of this 'dislodging'...? Or, for that matter, were there any chunks of the sound card pins broken off in the expansion slot......?

Meridian,
Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

Check all connections by unplugging - replugging them to the motherboard esp the PSU connections.

Try a 'barebones boot'. Disconnect or unplug sound card, hardrive and any other peripherals or cards not neccessary to at least get into BIOS. Then boot while tapping the correct key to get into BIOS. If you get there, you at least have a working basis to build upon or troubleshoot further.

When you press the power button, do the fans spin even for a minute second?

There wasn't any noticeble physical damage done. And the fans don't even begin to spin up. Absolutely nothing happens. I'll try the bare bones boot and see what happens. Thanks for the tips.

Ben

You just won't know about any short circuits or similar in any non-crucial component until you do.

No fans = No PC
