Hello,
I just bought an Athlon 1.4Ghz/200 and installed it into my Abit KT7a motherboard. When I powered up the computer did not post. I powered down, and put my old Athlon 900mhz CPU back into the motherboard (which was working fine 15 minutes earlier) and I got the same response. All fans started spinning, drives started spinning, but the computer did not post. Is the 1.4Ghz/200 incompatible with the board? Or could the board have just broke? I also checked the die's on both cpu's multiple times, and I saw no cracks. The only thing I can think of is that the motherboard needs to be replaced, and if that is the case can I use the 1.4ghz/200 cpu that I already have?
Thank you in advance,
Thomas B. Studee
Are did you reset the jumpers for the FSB?
Does your BIOS do "soft settings" for the CPU?
If so you may need to use the clear CMOS jumper to restore the default settings and let the BIOS redetect the CPU. If you have jumpers, make sure that they are set for whichever processor you have in at the time. Also go to the manufactuers website and look at the BIOS udpdates and see if any of them address things like "support for greater than 1GHz..." and if the version you hhave is at least that version.

Thanks for the reply,
I don't know what you mean by "soft settings" for the CPU.. Do you mean will my motherboard auto-set the clock speed to something like 600mhz to be safe, and allow me to change it at boot? If this is what you mean, then yes. Also I have tried to reset the CMOS, multiple times, and as I mentioned I tried my old 900Mhz with the same response. I checked Abit's website and there is a BIOS Update to support the 1.4ghz chip, but would installing the 1.4ghz chip without flashing the BIOS have damaged the motherboard? I should have done more research before I made the move, but unless the 1.4 damaged my motherboard, then the old 900 should still work fine. Is there any way to test my cpu's to make sure they are still good, so I don't go through another board? Or do you think the problem is solely the motherboard at this point?

I apologize, I forgot to mention all FSB and Multiplier settings are done through the BIOS.
Yes, that is what I meant...and if you have tried to clear the CMOS then it is likely that something else is wrong...check that everything is properly seated and then if that doesn't do it, pull everything except one stick of RAM, and the video card. The only way I know of to test a CPU is in another board.

Alright, I'll give that a try when I get home from work.
