View Full Version : Digital Camera: moving jpg files

I copied all the ".jpg" files off my digital camera's "drive" [SD memory card] onto the HDD; altered the file names from the form "Pict012.jpg" to "12.jpg" [on the HDD only] and deleted the originals [in the camera].
Before deleting them I could view them just fine on the HDD and camera using the PC, and also on the camera screen.

Then I decided I'd like to put them back on the camera to take to show them to someone, so copied them back to the camera's memory [or "drive"].
But they wouldn't show on the camera's screen. It was like they didn't exist.
I thought perhaps the file names had to be right, so I renamed them back to the form "Pict012.jpg" [on the camera], but they still wouldn't show on the camera's screen.
The HDD and camera copies show ok using the PC to view them.

Huh?

I thought you meant 'motion' jpegs as my camera software calls the mini movie function. I don't believe my pc alows uploading to it.

Try deleting them off the camera again and then making a folder on your HDD with the renamed to original files. Then load those onto the camera.

If the camera doesn't recognise the renamed ones, if you rename them while on the camera, it remembers the original (renamed) name anyway and doesn't allow itself to 'see' them as a result. Sounds good in theory anyway, I haven't tried it... ;)

You could always bring the cable and software along with you if they have a pc and correct port available too. Then transfer the data to their pc and try that.

There's a lot more information than just 'Pict012.jpg' per shot though such as date, time of day, shutter speed, pixels etc. This may be why it is not working but may work if you use the SD card (mine are xD) as a removeable drive to load to another pc. Even though the camera doesn't see it, it should work in the other person's pc assuming they have one.

Edit:
Try formatting the SD card if the first idea doesn't work before going through the trouble of the latter.

Edit#2:
I just tried it in my Fuji with a random pic and it works fine. In 'My Computer' I found a 'removable drive' listed, right clicked the random photo and chose 'save as' steered over to the drive and found 3 possible places to put the file. I put one copy in each folder so I'm not sure which one it is displaying at the moment and I will find out shortly once I format it clean and try each folder separately. By that time I may need a separate post to reply. Hang tight.

When I chose 'Save As' and maneuverwed to the removable drive and clicked 'Save' it did NOT work. Also did NOT work once I opened the first folder named 'Dcim'.

But when opening the Dcim folder there was another within named '100_fuji'. When I opened that one and saved the photo, it would display on the lcd screen of the camera.

Meanwhile my pc could 'see' the thumbnails in all 3 locations.

Sylvander,
Thanks for this thread. I was under the assumption that I needed a card reader to use (which are very rare for xD cards) in order use my setup as a removable drive. Being proved wrong in this case is good news! :p Hope you get your's sorted as well. :)

Well, I tried it anew and it worked! :)

Here's what I did:

1. Used the camera to reformat the SD memory card.
2. Took a new photo and viewed it on the camera’s screen.
3. Connected the camera to the PC’s USB connector; ran Windows Explorer; switched on the camera [it was detected ok]; navigated to the photo file and viewed it there using one of the PC’s photo viewer applications [Microsoft Photo Editor = MPE]. [Full-screen, high quality, 5 MegaPixel photos. Excellent!]
4. Cut and pasted it to the HDD and viewed it there using MPE.
5. Cut and pasted it back to the camera’s “drive” and again viewed it there using MPE [with the camera in “PC” mode] & then on the camera’s own screen [with the camera in “playback” mode].

I had previously cut & pasted an “.avi” movie [low quality, but with sound and interesting nevertheless] made on this [essentially stills] camera, to the HDD, so I tried copying it back to the camera and was able to view it on the camera's own screen.

So everything is now working as I’d expect. :D

Although I've not yet had the opportunity to try it, I'd expect it to be possible to use the camera to transfer files [of any kind] from one PC to another, provided they both have USB connections.
I have one 128 MB card and one 32 MB card, so this could be very useful.
It's also very useful to use the camera as a small, easily portable movie and photo viewer.

AHA! :)
I've just noticed the file names are of the form "Pict0097.xxx".
That's 4 numerical digits after the "Pict", and the extension is either "jpg" or "avi".
