I do not know if this has anything to do with it, but I recently change new hard drive and copy everthing to the new drive and it was working fine, but I Now when I go to shutdown it actually go to windows is ready to shutdown but that is all it does, it does not turn the computer off. we have to manually turn it off, when we turn it back on it does not go to scandisk so I suppose it is actually turning off but it is turning down the computer. help??????

Hello Randy,
Scandisk kicks in as a result of an improper shutdown of Windows. It would help to know what Operating System you are using?
Also, some system specs might be beneficial. How did you go about copying the old Hard Drive? In your current set up how do you have IDE devices positioned?
When you say everything was working fine...was this for a number of days following the copying of the HDD?

This computer is using win98 and I actually clone the hard drive with the copying utility that came with the hard drive. I upgraded a 8 gig to 40 gig hard drive and had to use a disk utility to fool the motherboard to support it. The upgraded hard drive is western digital. I did this for a friend computer and hook up my monitor, mouse etc and it was shutting down fine. When I drop it off they call me later that day and said it was not shutting down properly. ??????????????????????? so they have to physically turn it off after the use the shutdown menu. what is uppppppppppppppppp?

Hi Randy,
I think the first thing you should do is have a chat with your friends to find out whether they made any changes to the computer after you left.
Have they gone on an installing spree with this new HD. Shutdown problems can be hardware or software related and I would attempt to eliminate any software problems first. Have a look at this Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q202633) article to help you.
Please post back any results. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Next time they get the system up.....have them run SCANDISK. But I agree with geebee.....if they went on an installing spree, who knows what kind of stuff could be causing shutdown problems....but rest assured, it is probably software causing it.
