Please help....working on a box with w98 and upgraded to w2000.
After upgrade I lost the mouse and keyboard.
I tried a reformat and clean install of w2000 with no luck....same problem.
The box has a Shuttle AV18 MB with Via Apollo Pro 133 and Bios V1.3
I can install w98 just fine but would like to bring it up to w2000.
I changed the CMOS battery to no avail.
What confuses me is that in the bootup screen it NEVER says 'no mouse or keyboard detected'.

Looking into Bios updates I see they list the Shuttle MB as an AV18A or a AV18E. My board only says AV18. Does anyone know the difference?

I contacted Shuttle but never heard back yet. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should try next?

note: I can get into the bios on bootup and use the keyboard but after the OS boots up I lose the keyboard and mouse.

What type of mouse and keyboard are you using??

Have you checked the Win2000 Hardware Compatibility List with Microsoft to see if the Keyboard and Mouse are indeed compatible??

Have you tried a different mouse and keyboard?

I have used this mouse and keyboard for many w2000 upgrades and have had no problems.

Someone here may be familiar with the problem you're encountering and know right where to direct you...

However, when a query does not have an immediate answer from someone in the know, there are those of us here who set out to Google from various angles using different parameters in our searches.

My reason for asking what type of keyboard (i.e. PS/2, USB, Logitech, Microsoft, etc.) has to do with possible search parameters. There may be a known issue, such as your suspicion that it might have something to do with this version of a Shuttle motherboard...

I don't mind spending a little time checking for "known issues," but I suspect that if I put into my searches that, "I have used this mouse and keyboard for many w2000 upgrades and have had no problems," I'm not going to get much useful information back... ;)

(edit) You mentioned swapping the CMOS battery. Did you have it out long enough to clear the CMOS, or did you jumper to reset the defaults, or just swap out the battery?

Go into Device Manager; click "View Devices By Connection"; click on "Computer" and blip the "Numlock + star" keys together to expand your hardware tree, and look for you mouse and keyboard.

Are they listed and working?
Do they come under "Plug and Play BIOS"?
In your "BIOS Setup->PnP/PCI Configuration" [or similar]
Do you have:
"PnP OS Installed : Yes"?
"Resources Controlled By : Auto"?

It would do no harm to satisfy yourself that all your hardware is properly connected then reset:
[in the same place]
"Reset Configuration Data : Enabled"
[The BIOS will automatically reset this to "Disabled" again afterward]

This forces the BIOS to re-detect all the [PCI] hardware connected and make non-conflicting resource allocations and record them in the ESCD, so these resources will be provided at every startup.

Perhaps there are no resources available for your:
Mouse = IRQ 12? [Serial mouse using COM port, or PS2, or USB?]
Keyboard = IRQ 1? [USB or what?]

and they have been disabled by Windows.

Hi,
We didn't hear any answer from you regarding Whyzman question, "what kind of mouse do you have?"

Some motherboards have problem recognizing USB mouse under windows2000 and you need to disable all "USB Legacy support" such as DOS support from your CMOS. This would do the job if you have a USB mouse.

Thanks for your support....
The mouse I am using is a microsoft pci 2 button w/scroll wheel and a compaq standard pci keyboard

I can not get into the device manager since I have no mouse or keyboard.

I will try the Bios changes but I believe I've done that already

"I can get into the bios on bootup and use the keyboard but after the OS boots up I lose the keyboard and mouse."
Hmmmm,
Perhaps you need Win2000 compatible drivers installed for mouse & keyboard?

Have you tried "Step-by-step confirmation" to see if anything interesting shows there?

What happens if you try to start up in safe mode?

If you can get into safe mode, does the "bootlog.txt" file show any "Fail" items? [Use the "Find" facility to find them.]
