Hi folks,
Thanks for stopping by...

I have an AZZA mainboard 361BS with onboard vid, sound and USB (1?)

2 identical machines: 1 with 98SE, the other with ME

Installing my Digital camera (Fuji FinePix 3000) went without a hitch with 98 but I'll be darned if I can get the ME pc to recognize the USB ports! VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

System summary and Hardware Resources show IRQ10 as the PCI to USB controller location. The 2 ports are in Problem Devices with an error code 11.

The Fuji software has USB device drivers and all is reported as installed correctly and successfully but I can't even get the camera to act as a removable storage device as I can with the 98SE box.

Is it ME or is it me? :D My son lost his pci video card driver cd so I'm trying to transfer what I D/Led with the camera because it is too large for a floppy but not enough to bother with a cd. (~about 9 megs) Would the fact that his video card is in the top slot #1? have an effect on the USB ports? I even wrote zeros to the drive and started over but same results (just getting it back together anyway).

USB in BIOS is enabled.

Any ideas welcomed,
FrussTrayTed again...

FTT,
Try turning off the legacy USB support option in BIOS and see if it works then.

The only controls in BIOS for USB is on two lines:

1: Onchip USB (Enabled or Disabled)
2: USB keyboard support (Enabled or Disabled)

Tried the keyboard one both ways with Onchip enabled but nada.

Google searching error 11 finds me a page within Windows Support but it refers to some other motherboard series. But one of the fixes suggested is, if all else fails, try a USB add-on card.

Guess what I did after about 6 reinstalls... Some lesson in futility and ME I guess. That and no forum to run to all day yesterday! Got my question in then Charles shut the place down...

John, I will download the update if there is one sometime later but we're good for now though the board is a micro ATX with only 3 slots so it would be nice to free up a slot.

Edit: And thanks.

Dont know if this is relevant or if it helps but USB gets very funny if things are not installed in the correct order. Excepting HIDs (mice and simple, not composite, keyboards) which don't need specific drivers, always install the drivers before ever attaching the hardware to the PC.

You could try removing everything USB and USB related in safe mode and then install any relevant software/drivers. Then attach the camera. Otherwise wrong drivers or conflicts would seem to be on the cards.

Final thought is that after the clean installation and installatio of the drivers but before any USB hardware was attached - did the USB show up normally in Device Manager?

  Found it...

Went into BIOS with both pc's and went page by page duplicating his to be just like mine. I found 2 places that were different.

SoundBlaster was assigned to the same IRQ as the one USB was trying to use
And in PnP/PCI config, Assign IRQ for USB was disabled

Along with the Advanced chipset features page, that makes 3 places that affects the USB ports. I was only checking one yesterday.

Paul,
On one install (the first I think) I tried removing the USB items from Device Mangler. Wrong move! ME would not reboot much past POST before it would do a loop of restarting when trying to load devices. Over and over... Had no choice but to reinstall at that point.

Now please excuse me, I need to go crawl back under my rock... :o :o

would do a loop of restarting when trying to load devices. Over and over...

That sounds a bit screwy. Could the wrong drivers be involved?

It began immediately after I removed all there was to do with USB from Device Manager hoping it would find and reinstall after a reboot.

Device Manager is clean as a whistle now, no exclamation points whatsoever. Now on to tweaking this and that (msconfig, moving email to another partition etc) to get it to perform better, then installing FireFox, A/V, Sygate, etc...

I partitioned his drive for swapfile and more so I feel he'll be pleased for sure when he sees how much faster it will be compared to before with just one 20 gig harddrive and a bloated Program Files.

VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
and

with only 3 slots so it would be nice to free up a slot.

Didn't realize that was a PCI card. Thought it was onboard.

If there are onboard USB ports, have you tried to get up to date chipset drivers? That was my original intent. :)

It's a driver issue so just finding the right one will be difficult.
It's either a ME driver or the chipset driver.

I used the add on card just long enough to transfer the video card drivers to his pc. Then removed it, went into BIOS with both computers and by cloning mine I have since managed to get his onboard USB working.

Once I made the changes in BIOS I needed to do a repair install to get ME to correct the setup and USB is working.

I wonder if my USB install story might help.

I installed a PCI to USB controller card and Windows detected it and automatically installed the generic Windows 98 USB drivers for the card [an old version not newer than Win98 I think].
[I had installed Windows from install files on a 2nd HDD and the files remain there.]
But the camera wasn't detected when connected and powered up.

I had to "Update" the USB drivers to the Win98 ones supplied with the camera. It then worked fine.

QUESTION
Were WinME USB drivers supplied on a disk that came with the camera and did you "Update" to those after you updated to WinME?

Oops, you got in before me Ted. :)
Ehhh, that's 3 hrs before me, how did I miss that?
