Hi - Welcome aboard!
This sometimes happens when something in the system changes, such as OS upgrades. The other time you may see it is if you plug the device into a different USB port, or use a different user account under XP (some software just doesn't play nicely with multiple users)
The easiest way to get around this is to uninstall any software that came with the device, and remove it from device manager if it is listed. then reboot and follow the instructions that came with the camera. This usually means installing the software first, but check your manual.

My camera isn't detected until I SWITCH IT ON [I leave the cable permanently connected to the "PCI to USB Controller Card" and connect the camera (including its own power unit from the mains) before running Windows Explorer and switching on the camera].
The camera beeps as it switches on and then the additional "drive" appears after all the existing drive letters.
Which OS do you have?
Are you using the Windows generic USB drivers, or the USB drivers supplied with the camera that match the version of Windows?
I'm using Win98 and the [automatically installed] generic drivers didn't work [the camera didn't show when I switched on].
When I up-dated the driver to the Win98 USB drivers supplied with the camera, then everything worked. :)

You are keeping us uninformed on which OS you’re using and whether you have installed the USB drivers supplied with the camera that match your version of Windows.
Try this:
1. Connect your camera power supply and USB cable and set the camera mode to “PC” [or whatever your setting should be], but don’t switch it on.
2. Open Windows Explorer.
3. Open Device Manager and position the window so you can see the Explorer folder system behind. Click on “View Devices by connection”->click on “Computer” to highlight it=>hit both “Numlock & *” together [on the keyboard] to expand the hardware tree in Device Manager.
4. Scroll to:
__PCI to USB Open Host Controller
____USB Root Hub
5. Now switch on the camera and listen for the beep as it switches on [if it beeps].
The hardware tree should collapse a second or so after the beep and Explorer should show an additional “Removeable Disk [X:]” [where X is the drive letter].
6. Repeat 3 above to expand the hardware tree once more and you should now see:
__PCI to USB Open Host Controller
____USB Root Hub
______Digital Camera
________USB Mass Storage Device
__________Camera
If this is not what you see, then tell us EXACTLY what you do see.
