I thought I posted a suggestion here to try turning off the autoplay feature....but I guess it got lost in the rash of server errors we've had recently......

So try going into device manager and select it and then select the settings tab and un check the Auot-insert notification.....but you may have to manually start the DVDs and CDs.

Hi liamkincaid25,

You mentioned in your first post that your DVD drive doesn't read data cd's "most" of the time. What data cd's does it read? Are they all manufacture's cd's? Are they cd-r's or cd-rw's? What are the differences between the ones that work and the ones that don't? Does it read a certain cd one time and then later not read the same cd?

Have you checked in device manager to see if there are any conflicts?

Has this just started or has it been like this for a while?

Did your comp. come with this DVD player or did you install it?

I know. A lot of questions. But I've found... if you don't know the answer, start asking questions! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

thank you steve. the problem just started as soon as i put together the computer. it is a system made by me. all the discs that i have used are manufacturer,s cds mainly the drivers for the modem , sound card and the drivers for the dvd player(decoder). due to this problem i downloaded all the drivers from the net. i have some books and games ( games not that comlex , i.e. centipede , space invders etc) which the dvd refuses to read. there is no conflict on the device manager when this happens. and yes as you mentioned on certain times the same cd can be read and certains time can not. any further help will be appreciated . thanks for your time

Hi liamkincaid25,

This may not be a solution to your problem but it could be that your DVD lens needs cleaning (http://www.compareindia.com/tips/all_about_dvd_players.htm#cleaning). I'm not talking from experience though, it's just that you mentioned it read audio CD's okay. Audio CD's transfer data at a constant rate, about 150kb/sec but data CD's transfer data at, well, whatever your system can manage but much faster than audio ( I have to say that I'm not sure if the different transfer speeds are part of the reading process or only come into play at the transfer stage). Your problem indicates a problem only with high speed data transfers and an intermittent one at that.

Hmmm! could possibly be a driver issue as well but I suppose you will have already re-installed the drivers for it. I would go with the cleaning though. I would also swap the cable with another to eliminate that.

The DVD drive isn't under warranty by any chance?

Hope I haven't confused the issue.

Hi liamkincaid25,

If you can try it on another system that would definatly help you tell if it's a defective unit. Like geebee says, if it's under warranty, don't hesitate...

I'm sure you've seen this page, but just incase you haven't...
the page (http://www.hival.com/CDROM-faqs.htm#3)

There's some more troubleshooting info here. (http://www.hival.com/DVD-MANUALS.htm)

Sorry I can't offer more help. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
