I just bought a 1gb stick of ram. When i put it in my computer it only shows up as 512mb. I've tried it in all 3 slots with my old ram and without it. My motherboard accepts 3 sticks of 1gb ram so it should work. I think the old ram runs at 266mhz and the new one at 333mhz, no idea if that makes any difference,

I have,
AMD Athlon 2000+
1.67ghz processor
Motherboard KT3 Ultra 2 series

Any suggestions would be much appreciated,

Cheers

It's possible that the RAM module is only 512 MB.
Is it recognized as 512 MB in both BIOS and Windows?

You can run 266 MHz and 333 MHz RAM modules together on the same MB. The faster RAM will just slow down to the same speed as the slower RAM.

Agreed, check your source. Are you absolutely sure it's a 1GB stick? Can you get your money back easily?

Try bringing the RAM speed manually down to 266 in the BIOS and see what happens.

cheers for the replies. I'm certain it's 1gb, it's what I ordered and it says it is on the stick itself. The people I bought it off said it might be something to do with my motherboard not being set up for single channel ram. All I know is my motherboard has 3 slots and can handle 3gb of ram. Would I need to change something in the Bios maybe?

Your MB is compatible with single channel RAM according to the owner's manual which states:
-install at least one DIMM module(64MB-1GB)
-modules can be installed in the slots in any order
-you can install either single or double sided modules

However, MSI supports only the following 6 memory suppliers for your MB as shown here:
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=KT3_Ultra2&class=mb
Is the new module from one of these suppliers?
And I've seen RAM modules labeled as being larger than they actually were, especially from bargain suppliers.

The only setting in BIOS that should cause problems is the one for 'DRAM Frequency' (or similar), which should only affect the existing PC2100 RAM if the setting was configured at 166 MHz for the new RAM.
But if the setting is configured for 133 MHz for the existing PC2100 RAM, then it should have no effect on the new PC2700 RAM other than causing it to run at the same speed as the PC2100 RAM.

Who made the RAM stick? Who made the modules? Give us everything you can about this 1GB stick you have. Chances are that if it's cheap generic RAM, it won't work, so this is very important.

I bought off ebay, here's the link

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6709699094&ed=1096717758000&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOT:UK:3

They've said I can send it back. Maybe I'll be better off buying 2 512mb sticks (From someone else!!).

If they say money back take it. Normally e-Bay are reliable. Try Crucial.com.I don`t have the link right now, check via GOOGLE, they specialise in SDRAM and DDR Memory. Wela, Here it is http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp (Or USA)
