View Full Version : Opening desktop folder freezes machine
I have just assembled a new machine including a new motherboard, processor, case, and memory. All other items including the 2 HD's, DVD, etc are from my old machine.
Am running W98. Now whenever I try to open any desktop folder, including any new one, the machine hangs?? I can access the programs which are IN the folders from the Start menu however.
Have even restored the entire Windows directory from a backup, but still can't open a desktop folder without hanging. I am at a complete loss, would appreciate any suggestions.

Try deleting all shortcuts on desk top, and reinstalling them. If this does not work post back.

One day I will be a pro, Thanks Andy
The first thing I tried was to place a new folder then put the icons in it, but it still locked up when I tried to open the new folder. However, I have restored the \windows\ directory TWICE from old backups and that seems to have fixed the problem although I still don't know what file cause the issue in the first place. But fortunately I HAD backups to resort to. Thanks for the input.

After you installed all of this new hardware did you format and reinstall Windows if you didn't you will continue to have problems because Windows will try to use the old motherboard drivers and if you install the new drivers it could try to use both old and new drivers at the same time http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif You can move everything that you want to keep to your other drive format your Windows drive than move it back don't bother moving programs because they will have to be reinstalled anyway. Restoring old backups don't work because you are restoring the old drivers and they can't be used with the new motherboard

I think Windows XP and Microsoft use more of my bandwidth than I do!

No I didn't reformat the drive, had no idea that would be necessary.
This may also explain why the machine does not want to go into power save mode. Can't say I'm looking forward to having to reload everything, but ....
Thanks Ron
