Does or doesnt my mobo, asus p2b-s, support 512 or 1024 Mb RAM ?
When i look here :
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/english/techref/440bx/index.aspx
"8 up to 512 Mb"
But when i look here :
http://www.asus.com.tw/mb/archives/mbp2b-s.zip
"8 to 1024 Mb"
I have checked my CPU, and its a proper p2-400 which has a cacheable area of 4 Gb :). http://www.asuscom.de/support/FAQ/faq045_cacheable_area.htm
Tnx.
Conflicting data, for sure.
If you can borrow some RAM, then install it so that it's beyond the 512 MB 'limit'.
If it has problems, then 512 MB is max.

That's the i440BX chipset, which supports only 512MB of SDRAM. However, if you use the older & slower EDO RAM, you can put 1GB in there. Don't know why you'd want to do that, tho! :p

Tnx :)
I spoke to my brother yesterday and he has another pc at home with an asus p2b-f mobo. It's almost the same as mine, but no scsi controller on that 1.
He said in his manual it says "each dimm socket, max. 256 mb sdram - 4 slots, total system memory max. 1024 mb"
So i dl'd the manual for my mobo too (i bought this pc 2nd hand, no documentation), and it says exactly the same thing (see attached jpg).
So i think 1024 prolly is the limit.
But im gonna check that tip of yours out ski.

It can probably handle 1GB of RAM, then. Those older chipsets are hard to pin down, and after checking several sources, I can't seem to find any more info about the RAM limit. 1GB is the limit, but I guess that's for both EDO and SDRAM (tho one source didn't even cite EDO support in the BX chipset). This is weird.
In any case, it's entirely possible that Asus found a way around the limit, since the i440BX chipset lasted far longer than intended, and was even boot-strapped to handle the "Coppermine" PIII and its 133MHz FSB in later mobos. I'm not sure how that was accomplished, but that's not bad for a chipset that wasn't supposed to outlive the PII!
