I was given a pc to troubleshoot after a friend said her computer was smoking. She claims she plugged a cable in backwards. I found damage on one of the power cable extensions that wasn't being used (the smaller connection), so I clipped off the bad section and crimped on end connectors. When I turn on the pc, both the power supply and processor fans spin, as does the hard drive. Other than that, there is no response - no beeps and no display. Could the power supply still be bad? Did she fry the motherboard? Thanks for your suggestions.

Hello Srinda and welcome,
A few possibilities here. First, what connector was plugged in backwards? Smoke is bad. Electronics run on smoke and when you let it out, they don't run. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif JK
Second, have you tried reseating all cards and RAM? Have you tried 'known good' replacements of these parts? Have you tested voltage on all pins on PSU? Or tried this PSU in another machine?
Post back and we can go from there http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Now that's funny. "Electronics run on smoke and when you let it out, they don't run". http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
