This is probably a dumb question, but isn't my toshiba laptop supposed to produce system sounds even though I DON'T have speakers attached?

There are no sounds produced and i've checked the obviuos places...so anyone have any comments?

Classic,
How would there be sounds of any sort without some kind of speaker[s]?
Just curious where the sound would come from.

Most laptops have built in speakers, that's why I asked for the model number.

Even my acer 486 DOS Windows 3.1 laptop has an old fashioned PC speaker so you can hear post errors. Newer ones have stereo speakers.

Its a toshiba satellite 1110 series (DVD) only one yr old...and has speakers built in...so I'm expecting system sounds....

Just probably something easy, but it has me stumped. You know everytime someone logs in to msn or sends you an IM message, the computer lets you know...this one doesn't!!

any help would be a great help

Start- control panel- sounds and audio- sounds.
In there you can find sounds for everything your looking for including your own.
Just a note make sure that you look in there and make sure sounds have not been put on mute.
Hope this helps.

Oh yeah make sure the volume is turned up :)

but i checked all the obvious places and that was one of them....the computer tells me that everything is working fine and no mute and volume turned up...

Still Stumped

Well I figured it was something obvious, and it was--there is a physical volume control knob on the front of the laptop that was turned all the way down! I turned it up and voila, I have sound.

but its small and black and so it blends in with the rest of the laptop, and can't be seen unless you're specifically looking for it. Also PC's nornmally don't have that control, so I wasn't thinking of checking for something like that.

Also it gets turned down (or off) inadvertantly by just handling the laptop as your hand brushes acrosss that part of the hardware....so...

there you have it!
