Hi.. I just built a new computer for gaming and am having a problem. I am new to building PCs so I thought I would ask before I start "trying" things... Thanks in advance for all the help =)

Specs:
ASUS AZN8X-E Deluxe Mobo
AMD XP 3200+ CPU
Thermaltake Volc 12 Fan & HS
1gig (512x2) Dual Channel Patriot Ram
160gb Seagate SATA Hard Drive
Albatron FX57000 Vid Card
Rosewill DVD/CD Burner Combo
Hitachi Floppy
Antec 420Watt True Power supply

Problem:
The ASUS has a vocal post reporter system and when I turn the PC on, I get a message stating that system has failed due to CPU Overclocking (which I dont do) but the boot up continues and the reporter gives a self check complete message and XP Pro boots up (SP2). Everything will run uber for some random amount of time and then BOOM Everything Freezes. No blue screen, no nothing.. just freeze. Only way to get out is to reset the pc switch. Then sometimes it reboots, sometimes it doesn’t and I have to reset again. (btw my Asus probe says my CPU temp never goes above 41c)

Any Ideas????

Update : I ran Memtest.86 and memory past 5 times with no errors.

Hello Eelskraps, Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

It may be a good idea to reset the BIOS defaults. After saving and exiting., reboot and monitor the temps from there. The idea would be to see if you get it to freeze without Windows loading first...

If it still freezes, I would suggest a barebones boot...stripping it back to the bare essentials (i.e. RAM, Video card, CPU and heatsink, monitor).

Sadly I can answer that question now. It has frozen up on me while I was in the bios screen before. However I was not looking at temps when it happened.

I will try your recomendation tonight when I get home. Should I reset the bios by clearing the jumper or just the internal restore defaults option?

Thanks

What speed is your RAM? The Athlon XP3200+ requires DDR3200. IF you are using DDR 2700 you are overclocking you RAM and that will cause random instability.

Its DDR3200 dual channel. Shows operating at 200mhz during the POST.

FSB and RAM speed are independent of eachother. No problems there.

Reset the CMOS settings with the jumper on the mobo. That's the best way since that clears all data in the CMOS chip and forces the BIOS to freshly load its default settings back into CMOS.

There's no inherent reason why it should be telling you that you OC'ed your CPU. You haven't touched the FSB and/or RAM settings, have you? Maybe you should check again after you reset the CMOS.
