When my pc should be saying "it`s now safe to turn off your pc" it re-starts. I have recently reformatted the HDD and re-installed win 98. I have de-activated fast shutdown. Thank`s, Tom.

Hi,
Not sure how to help, but have a suggestion. Manually shut down all programs except Explorer and Systray by using the Close Program dialog box. Ctrl,Alt,Del ONCE. Highlight everything except the two previously mentioned programs and choose End Task. Then, try to shut down again and see what happens.
Post back with your progress.

First thing I would try is to get into safe mode on rebooting (hold down CTL or F8 key on starting-up) and see if it will close down normally from safe mode.
If my bad memory serves, there is a StartUp/ShutDown Troubleshooting Wizard in Win98. Could be worth a try. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

i have a similar problem ... my computer usually auto-shuts off (i forgot the term...atx motherboard i think? gee!!!) but sometimes, it just hangs in the "its now safe to turn of computer" page. is this due to windows hanging or something else?

Not very scientific but...you could try adding one program at a time back until you find the culprit

Yeah - what was the offending program?! Was it something called "rnaapp" by any chance (and does ANYONE know what the heck this *is*?!)

Sorry Folks for not letting you know exactly what the problem was.
I had reinstalled a program called window washer but, didn`t set it to close down the computer after it completed the wash program.
Thank`s again for all your help, Tom.
ps, how do you get rid of press f1 to continue at startup?

Go to Start/Run/type in msconfig....hit enter....go over to the "Startup" tab and uncheck it....that should do it....I hope!
